The sun beat down upon the earth, burning everything in its path; the grass was turning yellow where there was any; the red sand beneath the horses’ feet created almost constant dust storms; the smell of smoke could be smelt from miles.
The lake, the crowning glory of the valley, was low and turning dry; it held the least amount of water it ever had; summer had never been so bad before.

As dusk came and went, Tonight’s Trooper left the coolness of the cave he had taken refuge in all day.
He reached the lake and bent down to take a drink to quench his thirst, but his nose just found sand and dust.
He sighed, exasperated by the weather and clouds of dust went spiraling into the air, sending him into a coughing fit.

He searched the sky, as he had done since the night his mother passed on; searching for the angel that she was sure to be, or maybe searching for another shadow; the long wait for his father never seemed to pass even though he knew his father’s fate.
To the stars and the moon, and to remind himself he uttered, “The greatest fear is fear itself.”
And then addressing the sand that spiraled around him in its taunting fashion he addressed it, “so you want to dance do you?”
