Subject: The Miners Institute Crosskeys.

Hi, I am The Reader ofthe Parish of Risca, and the Vicar The Venerable John Blackburn is putting a stained glass window into St. Mary's Church, Risca in memory of the Mining Industry in this area.

Archdeacon Blackburn is doing this because he was in a local school and a little boy put his hand up and asked the teacher "What did a miner do?"

here is no memorial to those who worked and died in the local pits, even though the Blackvein Pit explosion was a national disaster when it happened in 1860

Last Sunday 30th September there was a special service to launch the appeal at St. Mary's Church, Risca.

In the window various scenes from the area will be illustrated.

Please does anyone have a photograph of the outside of the Miners Institute, Crosskeys. Also a photo of the Miners' Graveyard above the old Greenmeadow Inn? Or a photograph of Oxford House. And finally the Blackvein Colliery.We would like to see these so that the detail of this Memorial Window to the Mining Industry will be accurate for the generations to come.

Thanks for replying. I have seen the photo's on this website and they are excellent. But we need close up photographs so that the Stained Glass Window artist can see precise details of the buildings / Cwm Byr Gravestone inscription to copy correctly into the Miners' Memorial Window which is being installed into St. Mary The Virgin Church, Risca.
