Subject: Scents of Spring

Spring was a difficult time to sit in classes. In the morning, open windows in Mr. Assuma's class allowed the scent of lilacs to fill the room. Afternoons, the scent of fresh cut grass wafted through Mr. Miller's the room. All I wanted was to get onto the baseball field, but math class required full attention. Once out, the combined scents of the grass, dirt, and leather baseball gloves were entrancing, and walking home after practice provided the odor of outdoor grilling. These scents still abound and take me back to childhood. Unfortunately, Illinois doesn't provide some of the most compelling scents of Spring -- salt water, the ocean, and golf courses and parks here smell very different from Maple Moor and Eastchester parks.
