Maintaining Eagle in Lunar orbit would have required continuing guidance maneuvers and an expenditure of fuel, neither of which were options at the time.

There was also no mechanism for returning it to Earth, the priority being the crew, which moved from the Command Module to the Apollo capsule for the re-entry. The plan all along was for Eagle to crash once it had done the job.

Sad, because it was such an historic artifact. It's exhibit at the National Air and Space Museum would have been quite popular and, no doubt, inspirational to generations.

When I visited last year the Lunar related objects and shows were among the most heavily attended.
