I didn't live in the 1920's, but I still know the references "The bee's knees." and "The cat's meow". It's still part of our heritage and history. I didn't grow up in the swing era, but I'm still a fan of Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Glenn Miller and Duke Ellington. I also didn't see "South Pacific", "Carousel", "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Oklahoma" during their orignal run, but I know every lyric on every song of their albums. I'm also pleased to say that my 17 year old daughter has a connection to that history as well.
I don't understand your logic, just because one didn't grow up in a certain era, doesn't mean they shouldn't be curious about what went on then. It's as if one's history begins on one's date of birth. BUZZZZZZ. Sorry wrong.
My father-in-law is a holocaust survivor, I guess it would be OK if your "one" and his/her contemporaries to say, "Holocaust? What holocaust?"
