The problem with public opinion of pit bulls rests squarely on the shoulders of owners. I am not talking about people who fight or abuse their dogs, but those who go out of their way to perpetuate the unfair stereotype these dogs have received. Aggressive names, extreme earcropping, and overbreeding are just some of the things contributing to the negative image of the pitbull. Completely illiterate rants and raves about "BSL's" all over the internet certainly doesn't help either(it's called spellcheck, people). I own 3 pitbulls, and suffer the scrutiny given to these animals by the general public regularly, so I understand that it is mostly ignorance that causes people to dislike pit bulls. However, things like naming dogs "executioner", "gladiator" and "red reaper" and cutting dogs ears off, almost to the skull(a throwback to fighting) help make these dogs scary to the average person. The heavy overbreeding that leads to unwanted dogs that are "less than perfect", ends up putting a lot of dogs into the hands of inappropriate owners, too. As owners and lovers of the breed, it is up to us to shape the public's view on these animals. Stop giving dogs ferocious names associated with fighting or killing. Stop naming kennels and bloodlines with equally scary names. Stop cutting their ears off for the sake of an aggressive appearance- it is not healthy for the dog. Dogs ears are the shape they are for a reason, it helps keep dirt and debris out of their inner ear canal, which can cause discomfort and infection(like I say, I have three uncropped pits on 40 acres, and keeping their ears clean is a constant battle). Start being responsible owners. Start treating these animals like the sweet, affectionate, human loving dogs that they are. If you want to speak out against the unfair laws singling pit bulls out from the rest of the larger working breeds, do it with diplomacy. As long as people are using profanity, anger, and poor grammar in the defense of pit bulls, no one is going to take them seriously. We need to be pro-active against unscrupulous breeders, abusers and dog fighters- nobody else is going to come to the defense of our beloved breed. I know that many breeders and owners wont like what I'm saying here, but stop and think about it. The individual dogs are not the problem here, it is the general public perception of the breed as a whole. So. please, take off the spiked collars and 50 pound chains, take your dogs out into the world instead of keeping them caged, and teach them that aggression is intolerable behavior.... Its up to us....
