Veterans' Day - 2005

November 11, 2005

While I've been thinking about this day for the last couple of weeks, about what new and refreshing ideas I could put down on cyber-paper, frankly, there is nothing new to post.

The United States is, I believe, in one of the most important stages of its history at this very moment, battling the religious fanatics of Islam and the plain old fanatics who use Islam as a crutch to bring down Western civilization as it is known today. While there appears to be a lot of folk in the US and abroad who are aware and who acknowledge the intent of the Muslim world, the fanatical Muslim world to completely overthrow all vestiges of Christianity, and any other religions as well, there are just as many folks in the US and abroad who think appeasement is the only way out: Leave 'em alone, and they'll leave us alone. What a sack of crap. Where did it get Chamberlain in England, and why do these folks think this era will be any different?

Now, I'm not a really knowledgeable person in the ways of politics, but I think I do know right from wrong, good from bad, evil from happy. And while I don't think long and hard on the consequences of losing this fight, when I do think about it, it scares the hell out of me. To think this nation, this finest of places to live in the world would kowtow to the Islamofascists of the world, would cough up all the freedoms and opportunities we now possess - allowing that this nation is losing some freedoms in order to protect the populace - just to get the dogs away from its heels for a little while is worrisome at least, scary at best.

However, I'd rather give up a lot more freedoms and possessions now to ensure my own way of life as much as others' ways of life than acquiesce to the fanatics of the Middle Eastern cultures and religious undertones who seek total overthrow of Western Civilization and total domination of the world. Lots of folks here and abroad are whining and fidgeting, complaining and bitching about new and tighter controls on our own populace all because those controls hinder our own will to do whatever we want, whenever we want, to travel across the country by plane, or to go to granny's house for a visit. I think I know I'd rather have the gubmint on my side than their side, that these hindrances are necessary and even vital to the continuation of life as we know it, now.

But before you even think it, let me say I'm not in favor of a fascist society, in fact I absolutely and completely abhor one. Nor am I happy and content with the Bush administration as a whole. While I sure wouldn't run for his position, I think he is not protecting our way of life as we know it, specifically with regard to our border controls. I also think he really has pushed his luck by spouting off after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita with the amounts of money he or his administration is giving to the respective states to rebuild from the devastation. At this rate, the country could be bankrupt - as I understand it - in short order should another crisis come our way, any crisis of any kind. And that scares me.

But I've gone a bit overboard here, haven't I? My intent was not to spout off, rather to give thanks and sing praises of the Military Veterans of the United States for their own personal sacrifices during times of war and during times of peace, and for those veterans who have given the ultimate sacrifice while and when performing the duties of the military establishment. As I've posted before,

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the soldier who salutes the flag, serves under the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.

To all the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines, and not forgetting the Coasties nor the Reserves, I can only offer you my humblest thanks for a job well done for your services to your country.
