Again.. my apologies for the late response to this message. As I explained in my previous post, I've PCS'ed from Oki, and have been away from this forum until just today.

I'm sure "Rhoda" has all the answers she needs re: shipping her great danes - by now. But for anyone else seeking info on the process... be sure to get STARTED EARLY!!!!!! You need LOTS of time to process your pet's travel documents to enter Japan!!!! Be sure to go to voices4animals.com 's webpage for PCSing with your pets!!! Links to all the info you need with regard to going into and out of Okinawa with your pets will be found there...

As for housing, pets are allowed in all housing on post EXCEPT high rise quarters (apartment/multi-story living)!!

The problem with taking pets to Okinawa is that it is EXTREMELY difficult to find pet sitters, and the environment can be less than friendly (lots of parasites, extreme heat and humidity).

If you are moving to OKI with your pets -- PLEASE aquaint yourself with heat-related issues by talking with the vet. Never jog or walk with your dog from late morning until early evening. I only walked my dog at night (and LATE at night, too), and only if the humidty was reasonable.

Remember... dogs do not sweat!!! They cool themselves off by panting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When it's 90% humidity outside (give or take), panting does next to nothing for them, as it's the evaporation of water off their tongue that cools them.. and if it's humid.. there's no evaporation process!!

Our dog passed out and convulsed after only 15 min. outside one evening at 6:30 pm.. and he was just a PUPPY!!!! It's a hard lesson to learn.. and we're lucky he didn't die.

If your dog DOES overheat in Okinawa.. have a plan!!! Be sure to immediately hose your dog down with water.. NOT ice cold.. just regular ol' water!! Put him/her in front of a fan (when their wet)... and/or place icepacks under their armpits and in their groin areas to cool off their major arteries, which will then cool down their blood as it flows throughout their body..

NEVER give an overheated dog ICEWATER!!!!!!! This tricks their bodies into believing they are cooled down, and ends the cool-down process.. which can then hasten a heat stroke!!!!

Never leave your dog outdoors during the hot months (which is most of the year in Okinawa). If you do let your pet outdoors, never let them out for more than 10-15 minutes.. SUPERVISED!!! When the weather finally DOES cool down, let your pet enjoy it while they can. :)

Just my .02 cents while I was on the topic.... LOL! CAn't help myself...

~Kim :)
