Subject: Your favorite pick for Dr. Frankenstein

Colin Clive deserves a great deal of credit for playing such a mad, brilliant, yet gentle doctor in 1931's "Frankenstein" and the '35 sequel "The Bride of Frankenstein."

I have never seen Peter Cushing play the title character yet, but he must have been very good. Then, you have numerous actors who played Frankenstein at some point in time after Clive passed away. Discussion is welcome for all the actors who played the singular doctor and subsequent generations who came after him.

Colin Clive gets my vote as the best Dr Frankenstein for his performances in two of the greatest horror films ever made, Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935).

Peter Cushing would be my next favorite for The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), as well as several sequels.

Basil Rathbone was no match for Colin Clive in Son of Frankenstein (1939), but he was memorable in the role.

Cedric Hardwicke played the part in The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942), a pretty good Universal film.

Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man (1943) had Ilona Massey as Baroness Elsa Frankenstein, the daughter of Dr Frankenstein.

Boris Karloff was Dr Niemann in House of Frankenstein (1944), but he pretty much followed in the footsteps of Dr Frankenstein. Karloff was excellent in the role.

If its laughs you are looking for the funniest Dr Frankenstein has to be Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein (1974). I would bet that Officer Torch would agree with me on that one.

Yes indeed Sgt Tim, for laughs, hard to beat 1974s Young Frankenstein (iconic line: .....walk this way) One of the funniest movies around to me, nicely done in glorious black and white with a great cast.

There is one more, a moreso later film, rarely talked about, maybe underrated, 1994, kinda scary in some ways (maybe disturbing a better word), violent, and combines story of Frankenstein and Bride as well. It's a bit different, a tad long, in color. Do keep any youngsters away, really..they may have nightmares,(I'm not joking here)... its not as tame as any of the earlier ones. Its called Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, it stars (he got top billing) Robert DeNiro as the monster, Kenneth Branagh as Dr.Frankenstein, Helena Bonham Carter as the bride. Tim, Rick, if you haven't seen, by all means try.

Overall though, still give my vote to Colin Clive.

My picks are for the original Dr Frankenstein, not his sons as in "Son of Feankenstein" and "Ghost of Frankenstein."

Or later drive-in flicks like "I Was a Teenage Frankenstein" "Frankenstein 1970" and "Frankenstein's Daughter."

Or comedy spoofs like "Horror of Frankenstein" and "Young Frankenstein"


Favorite picks in this order:

Colin Clive is my absolute favorite Dr Frankenstein.

Peter Cushing in the Hammer series.

Leonard Whiting in "Frankenstein: The True Story."

Kenneth Branagh: Frankenstein (1994) Robert De Niro was the creature.

In any of the other Frankenstein movies, I thought the Dr. Frankensteins were just fair.

Clive played Dr Frankenstein as an obsessed scientist wanting to create life and he was basically a good man.

While Cushing had the same drive, he was more of an evil man.

All the Hammer Frankenstein films were more about Dr Frankenstein than the creature.

The same creature never appeared again in any of the hammer series. Dr Frankenstein always created a new monster in each film.

In 1957, Hammer started working on the Frankenstein concept and was doing rewrites for the picture. Universal found out and threatened to sue for breech of copyright, under the reasons for borrowing themes from their 1930's films. In doing so, Hammer had to make original themes for the 1957 film and later, they licensed the rights to all of Universal's horror films. This is why Frankenstein was evil and new monsters were created for sequels, ditto, etc.

When it came time to remake The Wolf Man, they rejected Universal's concept and based "Curse of the Werewolf" on the 1933 novel, "Werewolf of Paris."
