Yes, a great epic, great stars, story, music, sets, costumes, and likely greatest chariot race in 1959s Ben Hur. Pre CG. I first saw this as a kid in a nice theater. Few had proper screens, sound, equip for such films then. I recall (or heard) better or 1st run movies back then often played in 3 places...NYC, LA, and Atlantic City < where I saw Ben Hur, in pre casino days..Steel Pier, Mr.Peanut fare, various amusements instead on boardwalk.

Ok Rick, you wound me up...onto soap box I go. As a kid and over the years, I was a wide screen spectacular junkie, the epics, some semi epics??, but were to me anyway. Some barely made it onto VHS, a few dvd, some on import basis, ebay also. Many rarely shown on TV now. Well, here's partial list of some of my favorites in addition to Ben Hur. Soundtracks for these were often on vinyl and many were magnificent scores by composers of reknown. Feel free to add to this list or comment.

-The Ten Commandments 1956 (iconic parting of Red Sea)
-The Robe, and sequel Demetrius & the Gladiators(50s films)
-The Egyptian 1954,also little known semi remake from 1961, but low budget, with lovely Jeanne Crain as Nefertiti in "Queen of the Nile"
-King of Kings 1961 w/brilliant, moving music score.
-El Cid 1961 Actors, sets, battles, spectacular music
-The Bible 1966 Some interesting Old Testament segments
-Samson and Delilah 1949(color)V.Mature, lovely Hedy Lamarr
-Taras Bulba 1962 a gem , great story,stars/amazing battles
-Land of the Pharoahs 1955 intriguing story, Joan Collins
-Cleopatra 1963 for actors, costumes, color, sets, music
-The Vikings 1958
-The Long Ships 1964
-The 300 Spartans ..1961 version w/Richard Egan
-Jason and the Argonauts 1963 skeleton fight!?
-Excaliber 1981
-Clash of the Titans 1981
-The Mists of Avalon was a TBS movie (Quite good)
-The Odyssey 1997 Hallmark mini series
-Sodom and Gomorrah 1962
-Shogun 10hr mini series
-Atlantis, the Lost Continent 1961
-The Thief of Baghdad 1940 version, color fantasy w/Sabu
-What Dreams May Come 1998 R.Williams, not epic, but good

Hey guys...I left this one out because its not one of my genuine favorites. It's good though...and for those interested, (sorry, this is late notice) paper indicates its on tonight around 7 or 8pm Eastern.....Spartacus on TCM (commercial free). Check your local listings..its about 3hrs long. Think I mighta been making out at the local theater back then, considered the sword and sandle movie boring, too long, but had mind elsewhere. I really should give it another chance, though I did a few years back, and just dunno.... Will try again maybe.
