Subject: Eyes of the Underworld

I finally got to see a DVD copy of "Eyes of the Underworld" last weekend.

The Universal film starred Richard Dix and Lon Chaney Jr.
with Don Porter as a special investigator looking into police corruption.

The story is about a gang of car thieves. Dix played the police chief who is investigating the car thieves and Lon played his chauffeur Benny.

The thieves found out that Dix spent three years in prison for embezzlement long ago. One of the gang members (Marc Lawrence) allowed himself to be captured so he could blackmail the chief in giving the crook a gun and letting him escape. The chief didn't go for it, but the thieves cleverly used a recording to frame the chief in making it look like he went through with it.

I won't give anymore of the plot away. I'll just say that this movie was better than I thought it would be. It received a lot of low ratings from the critics, but I thought it was quite enjoyable for a B crime movie.

Also many have said that Lon Chaney Jr was just reprising his Lenny role, but I would say he was far from being retarded like Lenny.

Benny (Lon) came off more like a simpler minded Larry Talbot. Some of his scenes in "Eyes of the Underworld" reminded me a lot of Larry Talbot from "The Wolf Man."

A nice review, Dan. I have never seen Eyes of the Underworld, but it sounds like a pretty good film. Lon Chaney Jr is an underrated actor, and is always fun to watch in Universal horror and drama films, and in pictures for other studios as well.
