Not sure if Universal associated, but I remember the man most from the 50s TV series....Highway Patrol.(Wow!..156 episodes, 1955-1959.) He was tough, and perfect for the role as Chief Dan Mathews. Bet many who eventually went into law enforcement might have been influenced by this man/program. He was on TV often, movies and guest appearances also. Check out his impressive filmography listed on IMDb if you like.

I have to agree with Torch about Highway Patrol.
It wasn't a Universal production, but it was great show.
I remember watching it every week. 10-4 became a catch phrase.

For the Universal films "The Black Cat" (1941) is my favorite.

Universal Films:

The Black Cat (41)
North to the Klondike
Seven Sinners
Badlands of Dakota
Trail of the Vigilanties
Tight Shoes
When the Daltons Rode
Broadway

Non-Universal Films:

Larceny Inc.
All the King's Men
The Fastest Gun Alive.
