I was not a huge fan of the disaster film wave of the 1970s, although a few of the better ones made for good, entertaining popcorn movies.

Airport (1970) petty much set the standard for the decade of disaster films, including the use of an ensemble cast of big name Hollywood stars. Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, Helen Hayes, George Kennedy and Jacqueline Bisset were among the principals in Airport, which spawned a number of sequels and, by the end of the decade, parodies like Airplane (1980).

My favorite was The Poseidon Adventure (1972), although it was not a Universal picture. Once again a bevy of Hollywood legends signed on, including Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Red Buttons, Shelley Winters, Carol Lynley, Jack Albertson and Roddy McDowall. It was a gargantuan hit in December 1972 and early 1973, kind of a 1970s version of the box office monster Titantic (1997) from December 1997 and early 1998.

The Poseidon Adventure produced the hit song "The Morning After" by Maureen McGovern. I remember hearing the song on the radio before I ever saw the movie.

Tim
