Upon clicking onto the horror section of the this forum, you'll see a picture of a Universal archive dvd set. The 1941 The Black Cat is in that set FYI. If you didn't catch that movie, try to, lots of good cast. The "stuff" below has spoilers.

The Black Cat 1941 is completely different from the 1934 film, the latter of which I prefer...well, maybe depending on mood. The '41 version was however entertaining....a whodunit thing, like a Clue game, but with twists and maybe an unexpected ending. Also, add comedy relief by a pair of antique/furniture guys who reminded me of Abbott and Costello routines. Also, good talented cast members.

The older 1934 film with Karloff and Lugosi were moreso solid horror type movies; the '41 was ...whodunit, comedy, mystery, I guess, but not near the '34 "scary movie."

In essence, in the '41 movie, relatives are after a matriarchs estate. She apparently lasts longer than anticipated, but is eventually poisoned. Most of the events take place in the mansion. The woman liked cats...in fact had a crematory and shrine for their remains.

Murder after murder occurs from within. Our friend Bela Lugosi plays a gardner, Eduardo...he becomes suspect, but is eventually shot dead by the real murderer, Myrna. She nearly kills Elaine, played by lovely Anne Gwynne, and near end of movie, puts her (apparently still alive?? body) into the crematory. Oow...gory..But, Myrna is caught by "Gil" who stops her from firing things up further, but her own garment ignites from a candle, setting her up in flames and running.

Aside from the victims, the survivors (including Elaine) are ok, things work out we presume, and perhaps someone finally gets a decent nights sleep. (While murders take place, they keep insisting to try and get some sleep...yeah, sure.)

Some points of interest...about mid film, there's a storm. I think first lightning strike we saw might be stock footage used in FGCTU openers. Also, Salter was involved in music. Maybe a few familiar cues, but not really much.

Overall, I'd say this is an ok flick, not great, not bad, but ok to me. There was however an impressive cast.
