Sorry to say it, Rick, but I was a wee bit disappointed. It just didn't seem up to the Laemmle/ "Big U" standards. Even for a "B" level programmer it could have been better.
Valerie Hobson seemed lost, Dwight Frye was totally wasted, and WHY did they put Esther Dale in a "Big U" film set in England? Her "Ma Joad" style just didn't fit. I wonder if 95% of the budget went to pay Edmund Lowe? It's a shame, because with even a tiny bit of care, it could have been really good.
That said..Valerie Hobson is ALWAYS lovely...and I would watch her if she read a phonebook in pig latin. BTW, did you notice the Frankenstein Baronial bed from THE BRIDE gracing Ms. Hobson's boudoir? Now THAT would have been interesting casting. Colin Clive in the Edmund Lowe part, Edward Van Sloan in the Murray Kinnell part, Elspeth Dudgeon as Frye's mother...
I love Oppenheim's stuff. It's rather like the PRISONER OF ZENDA transferred to the playing fields of Eton...

I don't know if you've accessed this page, but it's a great piece to reference you with the films.

Thank you so much for the great site. The rist thing I'm going to do is jot down my favourites and check the vintage websites. If they are out there, I will find them, and report as to location, quality and price.
I just managed to get a copy of 1934 GREAT EXPECTATIONS, but it hasn't arrived yet.
Don't expect to find ONE MORE RIVER, though. It's a real shame..because it's one of "Jimmy's" best works, and also Clive's. It also has a tiny Whale cameo, with the only known recording of his voice!

I ordered "One More River" last July at Sam Spade Films, but it appears he went to movie Heaven! Not a LOL. I was lucky to him for almost a year.

My copy of ONE MORE RIVER was recorded off USA network around 1988 or so. Fortunately, it was a good print, and I have a "techie" friend who is going to DVD-R it for me.
