"The Cat Creeps" was the last of the Universal films that dealt with murders in a big spooky house. And it is also considered one the worst of the Universal horror films.

"Life Returns," (which I've never seen), "The Brute Man," "Jungle Woman," "Jungle Captive," "The Spider Woman Strikes Back," (I didn't think they were that bad), and "She-Wolf of London," (which was mediocre at best IMO) are some of the other films on the worst Universal horror film lists of the classic era.

The most enjoyable character in "The Cat Creeps" is Pidge, (Noah Beery Jr). Pidge plays the newspaper photographer and he's also the comic relief in the film. Noah Beery Jr is actually entertaining in this, rather than annoying, as most of the comic relief are in many other horror films.

One of the best moments is when the group first arrive on the island. It's spooky and atmospheric with mist and the old house and the full moon seen in the background.

Another good moment is the death of Grady (Paul Kelly) and the climatic fight between the villain and the hero.

"The Cat Creeps" is no "The Old Dark House" or "Secret of the Blue Room." And it might have been better if there was a Karloff, Lugosi, Atwill, or Zucco in the cast.

But anyway this is quick moving film that I found enjoyable despite the low budget and lack of any of the main horror stars.
