Subject: Favorite moments in Green Hell & Zanzibar (1940)

Two good jungle films and James Whale directed the first one.

Zanzibar starts with Jan Browning (Lola Lane) leading a big game hunting expedition via ship, but due to a request from the British government the hunt is sidetracked in an epic quest for the mysterious Skull of Sultan Mkwawa. The Skull holds great significance among the natives of the region. The ship sets sail carrying a cargo of lions and other big cats, encounters a fierce storm and the surviving crew ends up shipwrecked. Some of the lion footage is from the 1935 Universal adventure East of Java, and the two films have some plot similarities up to the point of the shipwreck. The balance of the picture is a fast-paced, peril-filled yarn that feels more like a serial than a B-movie. There is plenty of wild jungle action including lions, crocodiles and exotic natives. Some favorite moments include:

Jan Browning's right hand man Rhad Ramsey (Tom Fadden) helps Steve Marland (James Craig) stowaway, much to Jan's chagrin.

The villains Simpson and Koski ambush Captain Craig in his quarters.

After landing ashore Simpson tries to take charge, but the survivors vote to have Jan continue to lead the group.

"They're either gonna feed us, or cook us."
"Well maybe they’ll feed us first!"

Steve and Jan get their first look at the Temple and the Skull of Sultan Mkwawa.

Steve and Rhad rescue the captured Jan just in the nick of time.

The volcanic finale.

Tim
