If someone asked for my handful of top 5 horror/drama favorites from yesteryear (or as I sometimes call 'em "scary movies"), they would be the following: 1931s Dracula, '31s Frankenstein and '35 Bride of..., '34s The Black Cat, and 1932s The Mummy. Karloff and Lugosi gems. Yes, there were other good ones, but to me, these are my top five.

The Mummy...a 1932 movie. Who can forget those images of Karloff as Imhotep/Addeth Bey. The genuinely creepy appearance, the makeup, shadows, the building story....no CG, no tremendous action, but suspense, interest, drama, at times subtle, but a hard to beat movie. Great atmosphere, and as a Flash Gordon fan also, I enjoyed the idols/sets utilized.

A few years back, at some social gathering, folks were discussing "scarring movies" from yesteryear, and the subject of Tana leaves somehow came up, somebody being insistent it was in The Mummy ('32 version). I wasn't sure (that Incense of Forgetfulness stuff we talk about on the Flash Gordon part of this site was apparently at work). Eventually, I reviewed the movie...do not recall Tana leaves brought up. Then, checked the (kinda) sequel or follow-up, 1940s The Mummy's Hand. Tana leaves galore, I think! I digress....the 32s The Mummy was good. Guess it was considered good enough for a splashy remake in 1999...the aforementioned was CG action loaded, an exciting colorful flick....and ok I guess for modern times and audiences, but I'll still cast my vote for the original.

Note to Rick...thanks again for the Red Rock info....yes, I do recall seeing some of those areas...truly majestic, most interesting.
