This 1935 Universal film is seldom seen today, which is unfortunate. It is an enjoyable thriller with crisp dialogue and excellent performances. Edmumd Lowe plays the dual roles of Sir Everard Dominey, an Englishman, and an Austrian named Baron Leopold von Ragostein.

The two men look exactly, or nearly so, alike. They knew each other in their university days, and meet again in 1914 Africa. The Baron tells Dr Treak (Frank Reicher) that he will get rid of Dominey and assume his identity, for reasons of espionage and war. The imposter Dominey travels to London, and later to Dominey Hall, his neglected estate. Some favorite moments include:

The early scene in Africa with The Baron and Dominey sitting at a table with Dr Treak. Although the two men are almost identical, Treak can tell them apart.

Dominey encounters Princess Stephanie in London.

Dominey arrives at Dominey Hall, where he is confronted by a livid Mrs Unthank. She accuses him of being the murderer of her son Roger.

"The screams of Roger's ghost will drive you off!"

Spending his first night back in Dominey Hall, Sir Everard is awakened by ghostly screams, then is attacked with a knife.

Lady Elanor Dominey (Valerie Hobson) encounters her husband.

Princess Stephanie arrives at Dominey Hall, much to the chagrin of Sir Dominey.

"To be involved with one woman is bad enough. Two would be fatal."

Lady Elanor begins to suspect that this man is not really her husband.

The burning of the Black Bog.

Mrs Unthank shoots and kills the madman of the Black Bog.

Dr Treak arrives in England to identify once and for all whether this man is The Baron or Sir Dominey.
