The Silent Era

The silent Universal horror films were rarely shown on television when I was growing up, so I did not see any of them until much later on. They are certainly an important chapter in horror film history, and paved the way for the golden age.

Phantom of the Opera (1925) A silent masterpiece, and probably Lon Chaney's best known work.

The Golden Age

Dracula (1931) Launched the sound horror era as well as the grand Bela Lugosi.

Frankenstein (1931) Boris Karloff's star-making monster role. The monster is brought to life in the quintessential laboratory sequence.

The Mummy (1932) Atmospheric Karloff classic.

The Back Cat (1934) Karloff and Lugosi clash.

The Raven (1935) Boris and Bela meet again. Despite Karloff's top billing, Lugosi has the upper hand as a doctor obsessed with Edgar Allan Poe.

Bride of Frankenstein (1935) The monster speaks in this amazing sequel.

Werewolf of London (1935) The first werewolf movie of the sound era, too often overshadowed by The Wolf Man.

Dracula's Daughter (1936) Underrated sequel with Gloria Holden as Countess Zaleska and Irving Pichel as her creepy sidekick.

The Second Wave

The Wolf Man (1941) Lon Chaney Jr as the doomed Lawrence Talbot leads a great cast.

Phantom of the Opera (1943) Seen as too mainstream by some horror fans, I have always liked this technicolor effort with Claude Rains in the title role.

Son of Dracula (1943) Lon Chaney Jr is cast (some say miscast) as a vampire. An unusual and effective chiller.

House of Frankenstein (1945) A real Universal Monster Bash! Or is that Monster Mash?

The 1950s Revival

Mostly science fiction films during the Universal International 1950s, but their best horror effort of the period was Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
