Subject: Universal's "Crime Club" Film Series ( 1937-39 )

These films were adapted from the Crime Club series of novels back in the late 30's. The result was 7 films the studio made in that period. It was the first step to solve the financial crisis that Carl Laemmle created when he was producing "Show Boat" ( 1936 ) and got ousted.

Charles R. Rogers replaced him and implemented severe cost-cutting of the studio budgets. The 7 films didn't help the situation any. Subsequently, Rogers signed Deanna Durbin and Abbott and Costello and this pulled them out of financial trouble. A listing of these lesser-known films is provided below:
