That old time rock, creak & roll

Countdown generation kids across the nation are being wooed to a somewhat creaky and arthritic event in September dubbed the Countdown Spectacular 2. Yes, all those people in big hair and shoulder pads that haunt your dreams are being united for a tour of the nation.

Performers featured include such luminaries as the lead singers from Pilot (January, Magic), Racey (Lay Your Love on Me, Some Girls), The Knack (remember when they were the new Beatles with My Sharona?), M (Pop Muzik) and Aotearoa’s unforgettable Sharon O’Neill… whom everyone seems to have forgotten. Obviously they couldn't track down Pussyfoot or Toni Basil. Oh Mickey, what a pity.

Some of these old troupers actually have queer street cred, including Supernaut, whose only hit was I Like it Both Ways, Ignatius Jones of Jimmy and the Boys (but not, apparently, the fabulous Joylene Hairmouth), Les McKeown (rumoured to be the only straight member of the Bay City Rollers), and last but hardly least, Samantha Fox, the former British Page Three Girl of the Year who came out in 2003 with the following statement: “…I can't keep saying, ‘Maybe’, or denying it. It's time to let people know where my heart is. People keep trying to say I'm a lesbian. I don't know what I am. All I know is that I'm in love with Myra [Stratton, her manager]. I love her completely and want to spend the rest of my life with her.”

Now that was a turnabout for the books, but I still can’t see Sam attracting the sort of front row support you'd expect at a k d lang concert. I could be wrong.
