The sex hormones
We now review the physiological actions of the natural sex hormo gynaecological treatment many synthetic compounds are used; th~ described in Chapter 27 (p. 251), and some details of chemistry are poned for consideration in that chapter.
Gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH)
The neurosecretory cells of the medial basal hypothalamus secrete rei hormones for most of the anterior pituitary trophic hormones, ~ a hormone that inhibits the release of prolactin. The action of gOD phin-releasing hormone has been described in the previous chapter.
The pituitary hormones
Hormones secreted by the pituitary gland which are related to gyn gical work include:
1. Gonadotrophins of the anterior pituitary gland: (a) follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH); (b) luteinizing hormone (LH).
2. Prolactin of the anterior pituitary gland.
3. Oxytocic factor of the posterior pituitary gland.
Pituitary gonadotrophic hormones
The gonadotrophic hormones control the functions of the gonad in sexes. FSH and LH are secreted by the basophil cells of the pituitary, whereas prolactin is secreted by the acidophil cells. It not possible to obtain an extract from the pituitary consisting FSH or LH, and it is therefore not possible to do more than com gonadotrophic activity of any body fluid with that of an arbitrary preparation. The international reference preparation of human go phic derived from menopausal urine is commonly used (IRP .HMG). said to contain 40 iou. of FSH per mg, and 4 iou. of LH per mg.
Biological methods of assay of FSH and LH were formerly use is now possible to make reliable estimations of the blood levels hormones by radioimmunoassay. The difficulties remain that there
