Everyone basically grew up together but they forgot about us because we went to train with our much higher educated family members. This I guess was acceptable as long as we passed our genin test.
You go to train with your...some family member.
Kiya goes to train with her much cooler cousin who's a traker-nin. That's where she learns the traking jutsu.
Kenshin trains with his father who teaches him mind manipulation.

Something like that.
