Subject: almost lost Chippy today

and had a heart attack in the process

Seriously though, Chippy escaped today while i had him and Benni outside on the deck in their cages for their showers/cage cleanings. Somehow the Chipster managed to push the bottom grate forward just enough to stick his little cherry head out and squeeze out. By the time i saw him he was jumping down on the deck and running towards the edge. Thank goodness he doesnt fly, but he sure does run fast. I live in a townhouse so my neighbors deck is right next to mine but elevated about 8 inches higher so chippy jumped right off of my deck, onto the ground and right under my neighbors deck. There is no way any human can get under there to retrieve him..he managed to run back about 25 feet or so and sat there in the dark. I could hear him but not see him. I had to go up onto the neighbors deck and try to get him from a hole they had cut for their A/C unit to set in, but i had no luck. I went back and laid belly in a puddle of dirt and water and was able to see under their deck to see Chippy. After about 20 minutes of me singing his favorite song to him and holding up his favorite toy with a bell on it he finally came out. Twice he came out half way then turned and ran back, but eventually he came all the way and squeezed back thru the holes in the lattice where i was able to reach my hands thru my railing and get to him (not without a nasty bite though). His cage was still open on the deck so i just opened the screen door and literally threw Chippy inside the house and closed the screen door! Once i calmed down i went inside the house and found him in his favorite corner so i got him into a travel cage and all secure. The poor fella was scared and boy oh boy did he stink. Just that short time under the deck in the dirt and poo-tinkey...i had to give him a bath all over again.

From now on i'm using cable ties to hold the grate in the cage so he cant get out!!!

This really upsets me, all i could think of was oh no i cant go thru this again...Yesterday was the 3 year anniversery of Lucy being lost and found. When i lost lucy it was just my plain old stupidity and not being educated...this time with Chippy it was just a matter of me not paying attention to his cage. I was so intent on having the door locked and the feeder doors secure that i didnt even think about the grate..it must have nudged just a bit when i rolled the cage outside and that was enought for the beast to wiggle his head in and push it open up more.

I'm just so glad he didnt fly off (like Lucy did) and he got brave enough to come out from under the deck when i sang to him! Lol its funny cuz my singing usually scares people away!!!
