Subject: A note about Socialized Greys (long)
In reply to: Kc 's message, "Re: picture included (Mary) lol" on 20:56:53 11/03/05 Thu

Well too you have to consider what you get with a baby like that... they are MUCH easier to work with when well socialized and properly raised. I have raised severl congos at work and we thoroughly socialize them. It is alot of work and dedication!!! We expose our babies to everything and work with them constantly. When i am there i will go on the register and put the brooder/weaning cage next to me (we have a closed counter) and play and stimulate them constantly. (we sell our Congo greys for 1500) I am also one of 4 people who are allowed to handfeed and the others are managers... I dote over them and we all spend alot of time with them when feeding. This is done with all of our babies from Tiels to Macaws and Cockatoos.

I wish i had the same opporotunities with my grey Sam. I got him as an adult... and although he is coming around now EVERYTHING is on his terms and he is not open to new things! It has taken him over a year to start playing with his toys. He just discovered them last month and i am totally replacing his toys weekly now because he just discovered the idea of play. I know this is partly because i got him older and he was not worked with... but I also happen to knw the lady who bred him (just by chance i took him in and he happened to be a '96 baby from a breeder friend on mine). I know that she does not stimulate them and she is not as much into socialization. He was most likely limited to contact only during feeding.

I totally understand the cost factor!!! But definately dont just get any bird just because it is the first that falls into your price range (and if you look you should find one for what you are looking at). Greys can easily become nuerotic and are very prone top behavioral problems... which I feel alot of is contributed to how they were raised. (And I definately dont wish what i am going through with Sam on anyone... It is REALLY hard to regain their trust he is just starting to come around and I got him in August '04)
