Well there's lots of ways--Do you see a jagged edge of bone sticking thru the skin ?? If so it's broke.. Do you see a big bump in the skin where it hurts but no bone sticking thru ? It's broke--Can you bend it or move it any ? If not probably broke but maybe not- get an xray. Can you move or bend it ? If so probably just a big painful jam, ice for swelling aspirin for pain and watch it to see if it gets worse----Main thing and give away is mobility and the subsiding of the pain after a day or so. Now a chipped bone or a greenstick well that's what xrays are for you may have some painful mobility in the finger, but pain will not go away after a few days--get xray. If the finger is bent and you can't straighten it--see the doc anyway, you can't be doing stuff with a finger that looks like a question mark---If I kiss it will it make it all better ????
