I think most families have that kind of element to them. There seems to be favorites and/or outcasts in every one. Granted, some may be 'deserved' but not for the most part. I gave up trying to please in-laws and my own parents for that matter. I'll never measure up to what they expect. Even if I did they would just raise the bar on me anyway. I've just learned to accept my dysfunctional family the way they are, dysfunctional. I still feel disappointment sometimes, just not with the same intensity. Certain family dynamics are just inherent, and always will be. Your immediate family is what is most important anyway. So just focus on loving them unconditionally, but don't stop loving others as well. (especially when its difficult) You'll be the better person in the end.
