We had the same thing happen in Columbus a couple of years ago. Some mentally deranged yahoo with a 9mm handgun (not exactly the weapon of choice for a ‘sniper’) was taking pot shots at cars from freeway overpasses. The press – naturally – insisted on referring to him as a ‘sniper’. Why is that exactly? If a guy stabs someone with a knife in a barroom brawl, he’s not referred to as a ‘surgeon’. If a punk pulls you out of your car and drives away, he’s not referred to as a ‘valet’. A crack dealer isn’t a ‘pharmaceutical salesman’, nor a homeless wino an ‘outdoorsman’. But every crackpot with a firearm is a ‘sniper’. Makes you wonder.

It isn’t simply gunman though. Here around six years ago or so, the brother-in-law of a good friend of mine went on a killing spree, murdering three teenage girls and his Bible study teacher, and wounding several other people over the course of a week. The local media referred to him on several occasions as a ‘martial arts expert’. What’s it take to become a ‘martial arts expert’ in the eyes of the media these days? Try a Yellow Belt in TaeKwon Do. I guess that would make me a veritable Master Po or something.
