This film is on the ÔArmed Forces Special Powers ActÕ in place in Manipur, North East India. The Act was promulgated in 1958 to deal with counter insurgents in the North Eastern states, where it continues to be in force but has over the years also been used in Jammu and Kashmir. In 2004, Manipur witnessed a mass upsurge against this act which among other draconian powers, gives a non commissioned officer in the paramilitary forces the right to Òfire upon or otherwise use force, even to the causing of deathÓ. This unprecedented mass protest was against the rape and murder of Thangjam Manorama , a 32 year old , by the Military on the suspicion of being a member of an insurgent group. This film is a diary of the events which took place with the abduction, rape and subsequent killing of Thangjam Manorama. Through the lens of ManoramaÕs killing, the film makes a powerful statement on the fear, daily indignities and human rights violations characterising the lives of the people of Manipur and their brave struggle to get this draconian act repealed.

Haoban Paban Kumar is a young film maker, born and raised in Manipur, and is currently studying film-direction in his final semester at the SRFTI-film school of Calcutta. The film has been awarded the International Jury Award and the International Film Critics Federation (FIPRESCI) Award at the 9th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) in 2006, the Best Documentary Award at the Signs 2006 Festival of short documentary and videos, a Special Mention by the Egyptian Cinema Critics Association and the ACT Award at the 10th Ismailia International Film Festival in Egypt.
