Association for the Study of Ginans
Memo from Pyarali Jiwa
Date: 19th May 2007
As you are aware, the Ginan Study Group has during its short existence has been involved in three International Conferences. The first conference was held in association with the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes at Sorbonne Paris at the French Riviera in April 2002; followed by the second in collaboration with and at the location of the University of Saurastra Rajkot India in November 2004; and the third entitled 'Devotional Expressions of South Asian Muslims' organised by The Institute of Ismaili Studies at the Ismaili Centre London in November 2006.

I am now very happy to advise you that the next conference of the Ginan Study Group will be held at Holiday Inn Hotel at Camden Lock in London on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June 2007. The two-day event would include Ginan recitation on Saturday evening and a full day conference on Sunday with presentations by a number of renowned scholars. Meals will be served, and refreshments will be available throughout the day. A special concessionary rate would be available to delegates wishing to stay at the hotel.

The highlight of the conference will be the launch of the book entitled:
Ginans: Texts and Contexts
Essays on Ismaili Hymns from South Asia
in Honour of Zawahir Moir
Edited by
Tazim R Kassam - Fran¨oise Mallison

Zawahir has dedicated much of her time on the study of Ginans, and the book has very interesting articles and essays by eminent International Scholars (details are attached herewith). The book is published by Matrix Publishers in India and has the usual high quality of paper and cover expected of such publications.

Contributions of great poets like Kabir, Meerabai, Iqbal and others have been acknowledged widely but very little is known about our Pirs who were great philosophers and poets and who made a significant contribution to society. The work of the contributors to the book is therefore a most useful reminder.

At the conference we would formalise our 'Association for the Study of Ginans' whose aims and objectives would be to promote, study, research, publish and create awareness of the Ginans. The Constitution would be approved and the Office bearers elected.

To support the work of the group, I am looking for your kind support in these areas:

1. I would request you to advance order the number of copies that you and your associates would require. The cost would be Indian Rupees 800 for a set consisting of the book and a CD and to include shipping costs. The price in UK would be £10. Please let me know as soon as possible the quantity you would require. Proforma Invoice would be sent to you and payment should be made by credit card. Kindly provide details such as type of card, name of cardholder, card number, start and expiry dates, and the 3 CVV digits at the back of the card.
2. You may donate any further amounts to the Association in order to promote and carry out the aims and objectives.
3. You are cordially invited to become a member of the Association.
4. You may contribute by placing an advert in our Souvenir which would be published on this occasion; the rate would be £125 for half page and £250 for full page. Subscribers to the souvenir (and their spouses) are cordially invited to the 2 day event.
5. To cover the cost of the event, a contribution of £20 is requested for the 2 day event. Kindly inform me off your requirements which would be confirmed in writing by myself nearer the time.

In order to assist with the organisation would you kindly indicate if you would be gracing the event with your attendance, the number of books required, the contribution for advertisement and any contribution you wish to make.

With best regards
Pyarali Jiwa
