Job Summary:
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a qualified candidate fill a Research Fellow (RF) position for a three-year renewable position in its New Delhi office in India.
IFPRI is an international research organization working on policies to find sustainable solutions for ending hunger and poverty. IFPRI works closely with partners in different parts of the world. Through its New Delhi office, headed by a Director, IFPRI is scaling up its activities in Asia, with initial focus on South Asia. This office will work on policy issues of critical importance in the region. Such issues that appear high on the agenda in the region are governance related to rural growth and poverty reduction; the changing structure of agri-business and its implications for small holders; economic and social safety nets for the poor; water-management; mainstreaming of gender issues, etc.
The RF will work on the issues related to the role of governance in promoting growth and reducing poverty. In this context, the work would involve analyzing political economy factors of policy making related to rural development and poverty alleviation. This would include evaluating options for improving appropriately decentralized provision of services in rural areas, identifying the role of state, private sector, and civil society in various economic and social programs such as anti-poverty programs, affirmative policies, management schemes of natural resources, interventions to promote nutritional security, etc. The RF would also examine issues of corporate governance to the extent they affect food systems and livelihoods of poor people.
The initial focus of the work will be on South Asia, with possible extension to southeast and central Asia. In close collaboration with partner research institutions in the region, the work will include developing conceptual frameworks, organizing field research (including surveys and interviews with stakeholders) in the region, data analysis, preparation of reports and publications, and dissemination of the results to policy makers and other stakeholders in the region.
This position requires good interaction with various stakeholders in the region (academia, policy makers, NGOs, donors, etc). The RF is also expected to effectively coordinate with the Governance program at IFPRI and with other research organizations in the region doing similar work. The RF will also help the IFPRI Director in Asia to raise resources for working on various projects related to governance.
Required Qualifications:
· Ph.D. in Political Science, Rural Sociology, Economics, Agricultural Economics, or related fields
· Minimum 3 years post Ph.D. experience in empirical policy-relevant research on governance in developing countries
· Strong capabilities in quantitative and qualitative analysis
· Ability to use economic theory in innovative and policy relevant ways
· Experience in conducting surveys to collect and analyze primary data
· Good academic publication record
· Ability to travel extensively
· Ability to raise funds for research
· Strong communication skills in written and spoken English
Preferred Qualifications:
· Work experience in Asia, especially south and southeast Asia
· Language skills relevant for work in the region
· Previous experience carrying out research on governance issues in developing countries
