The Indian Ocean as a site of multi-directional migration brings together
the Malays, Chinese, Indians, Arabs and Africans. It is also an area where
Britain, Denmark, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Portugal, Spain and USA
came into contact with Africa, the Middle East and the Orient. By using a
multi-disciplinary approach, this seminar aims to stimulate scholarly debate
and discussion on cultures in contact in this region of growing economic
importance.
