The one two common types that have the head crest are the Gambels and the California Valley Quail, but those aren't real tiny like a button quail, they are more the size of a dove.
The other's that have a crest would be the Mountain Quail,but that is larger than the two mentioned above and the crest on a Mountain is like a long straight feather that's points towards the back of the bird (gosh I hope I'm painting a decent enough picture here).
The Blue Scaled Quail also can raise their head feathers and the tips of the feathers on the 'mohawk' are white giving it a crest type appearance. And I think there is one more crested breed, but can't think of the name, again nothing tiny though unless maybe the pet store years ago had very young quail and that's why they were so small.
I have young California Valley Quail and they were showing their crests already at a young age even before coloring out in their adult plumage.....so that might be what you saw back then.
The Valleys and Gambels are pretty flighty birds, mine are a pain right now because they are in the smaller of my two dove aviaries and they need something much bigger so that I can move around without them feeling cornered, otherwise they kind of flip out while I'm trying to water and feed. Plus I have small Diamond Doves in with the Valleys and I know that I have about 2 weeks left before the Valleys start becoming agressive and territorial about the aviary.

I hope that at least helps a little bit.
