Subject: Ostrich transport/horse trailer...
In reply to: Tina the lurker 's message, "Re: The Ostrich Farm and My Ostriches!" on Tuesday, March 13, 04:30:42pm

Tina, that is so funny....I am glad they gave you a good laugh. Adults on the road were just oblivious....kids in the cars were smiling, laughing and pointing because they could see these long necks come up with a huge bird head on top peering out at them.
The funny thing is, the birds should NOT have been that big. They should have been more turkey sized....which would have fit in the back of an SUV better and ABSOLUTELY it will need to be a horse trailer in the future.....in fact that is how everyone transports them.
So for the cost of the birds, and the fact that I wanted to be able to work with them before they were so big that they were kind of scary....I went for small 3 months old Ostriches. The guy was just really nice and decided he wanted to give me a better start when he heard I wanted to raise them for personal meat and eggs and even the leather if I can find a good leather tanner, etc.....so he said he wanted to get me a better start and gave me bigger birds.
God help me now......I went ahead with it even though in the back of my mind I wanted to say....NO NO that's totally generous of you, but I'll go with the small ones so I can work with them better....... but it just didn't come out of my mouth. In fact, the birds he gave me would be more like $500 a piece and I didn't even pay that for the both together....so he really was very good to me..... now I have my hand full for sure.

Keep staying on the board Tina......in case anyone ever takes anything I say in a bad way whether it be a snide remark or not......it's ALWAYS meant to joke and tease and make everyone laugh and get chit chatting.
