Subject: Various cages, aviaries and pens...

So far I haven't really built any of the pens myself except the goose pen. The chickens are in dog runs that have chicken wire hog ringed to the top and then shade cloth. This way we can make hen houses (small ones) or roosts or whatever for inside but still drag them around to be placed on top of the sprouted weeds which they love scratching around to dig up. The aviaries were all precut panels of heavy gauge welded wire and one with a door frame put into it. The hen house was hand built by the previous owners decades ago and we just cleaned it up and re-wired parts of it to make it usable for now. The pipe stall/corral was purchased as 12 foot panels and I made it into a 12 x 24 foot corral. The pig pen is an 8 x 8 foot with premade hog panels, which is going to get expanded to 8 x 16 as they grow.
The one thing I am actually going to build hopefully in the next few weeks, is a new hen house out of a framing kit called 'star plates'. You take 25 pieces of lumber all the same size.....so depending on how big you want your building....and you can use 2x2s, 2x4s, or even 4x4s to connect all the plates and it makes a sort of dome shaped building. Once the frame is together, we are wiring all the sides and then going to enclose most of the bottom of the entire building but leaving the top section open for ventilation and it will become the new brooder house/grow out pen for babies that I hatch. Then the day will come when I can finally take that old hen house down and haul it away....it's an eyesore, but still usable and I needed it....then the yard should finally look nice without that rickety old hen house all rusted and termite ridden.
