Mann Family TN -- Coy Costa (hopefull), 12:46:48 09/11/09 Fri [1]

I am looking for info about Benjamin Mann and Victoria Flippin
Victoria's great great grandparents were John Bryant(1/2 Cherokee) and Lucy Ward
http://billhyde.tripod.com/HYDE7.HTM#p2129
http://tn-roots.com/tngibson/photos/monu~1.htm

I am fairly convinced she may have changed her name to Vandala and or Mary Ann

Benjamin may have went by Jim

The cemetery where Benjamin and Victoria's verified children are burried has Jim and Vandala as the oldest Mann people listed there @ Pleasant green (aka Campground)
http://tn-roots.com/tngibson/cemeteries/campground.htm

The dates are not matching up exactly but the names I have for their children are the same as Benjamin and Victoria's kids. One that sticks out is Jkane. That is just too rare it has to be the same family at the least.

Any thoughts?

Can't ID Alexander and Lusena Melbery Williams -- K Y Westerman (Curious K .Y. Westerman), 01:07:10 08/23/09 Sun [1]

I have been looking on many websites for the parents of MELBERY MALINDA WILLIAMS CATES, bn 1821 Coffee Co Tn. Family Search names Alexander Williams and Lusena Melbery bn NC as mother and father. Lula Teague (grandmother) said Malinda was Cherokee on the father's side, I have a picture of her with copper bracelets. She married Sackfield Cates in 1841 Coffee Co Tn. Moved to MO 1850. Also, would like to verify that GGGG grandmother, JEANIE JANE LONG JACOBS, bn 1752 Orange co NC, m. Richard James Nalley Hargis, was of Cherokee descent. My dad knew many things that seemed very strange when I was young, like believing in little people, he talked to the wind, he could appear to disappear in the woods claiming to shapeshift, walk up on a deer. His mother, Addie Pearl Hargis, knew how to use herbs and bear fat mixed with honey for medicine. The family leg wrestled. I often heard "Life is a circle". Ways of the Cherokee? Thank You for any help. I don't know where else to look in these early years before Rolls.

I believe I am a descendent of Chief Colonel Johnson Harris. I need to know his children and their spouses and their children. My great grandfather was Watsey Harris of Shelby County, Texas. My grandmother was Maxie Rosine Harris Fowler. I have been trying to trace my roots for many years. I don't want anything in return, but just to know of my Cherokee heritage. Too many times I get upset when the Indians are mis-treated and when younger I would dress like the squaws. My parents were extremely ruddish colored, black haired and have black eyes. I know I have some out there somewhere. Need help!

Margaret Wa-Kee Downing's Possible Squirrel Husband -- Gen, 10:39:36 04/12/09 Sun [1]

There's been discussion as to how many of Margaret Downing's children were really by Bledsoe Gore and how many by others. One child is Annie Squirrel Gore. She and Jack Squirrel are listed on 1851 list, according to other posts on this site.

I did find where Downing's, Ward's, and Quarles (said outloud sounds like squarl/squirrel) were all members of Baptist Church that has history in both Old and New Cherokee Nations ... Old Baptist Mission Church, and 14th Mile Creek Church. The church group appeared to have migrated together to new territory.

Margaret Wa-kee Downing's Possible Bowles Husband? -- Gen, 10:26:53 09/15/08 Mon [1]

Margaret Wa-kee Downing had a son, Arlie Bowles Gore, attributed to Bledsoe Gore. There's been discussion as to how many of Margaret's children were really from her Gore husband, as most have other names as well, including Nelms and Squirrel.

There were Cherokee settlements/territory in Missouri and I found these records that may possibly be the same Margaret Downing.

Early Court Records, 1820-1823, Missouri (record vague but looks like to be in St. Charles Co.):

Feb 1821 Margret Downey/Margrette Downing
Dower Court Case
She agrees to take 30 acres of Francis Smith's land instead of full dower. (her husband has died and she's getting her part of estate; was Francis Smith that husband?)

June 1821 Margaret Downing vs. William Luckett
Public Sale Action
Downing has secured an order to sale to justify judgement of $27.21 against Luckett
Later, same month, State of MO vs. William Luckett/Lucket
Resisting an Officer
Luckett prevented constable William Sublette from serving execution for judgement in favor of Margaret Downing

Also June 1821
Ambrose Bowles is mentioned in some court records concerning debt/bond, change of venue from Franklin Co. Records are before and after Margaret Downing's cases, so it's possible the two were in courthouse at same time.

More research is needed to determine if this Margaret Downing is the same as Margaret Wa-kee Downing.

Gore: Bledsoe vs. Samuel vs. Samuel Bledsoe -- Gen, 09:39:55 06/12/08 Thu [1]

Looking to correspond with anyone of those three men to try to help determine how many different men there are. I descend thru Samuel who went on Choctaw Migration arriving 10 Dec 1832 from Yazoo Co., MS.

When there are gaps in records of Bledsoe Gore, there are records found for Samuel Gore. I've not found any for a Samuel Bledsoe Gore, so I'm wondering if researchers have combined the two men into one. Also in some records the dates vary so much, there has to be more than one person's history combined to get the info listed.

I would love more information past Samuel Russell as well, if available, what their occupations were, etc and stories if there are any about any or all of my relatives, I have also searched the wives' lineages as well, until I have come to dead ends. The majority is located here in the US when the US was just discovered, as well as a few lines coming from England. I would love to be able to get lists of the boats or ships' names that my ancestors traveled across and who are Cherokee so that I may know myself, though only from a single side, my fathers. One thing I know is that before 1700 the lineage in Cherokee culture went through the Mothers, NOT the fathers as most would suspect. Please contact my email address for any and all informations, questions, additions, etc!

Louisa Anna Hobbs Woodson 1877 half Cherokee -- P Woodson (happy), 03:41:53 01/09/08 Wed [1]

I am trying to locate info on my grandmother Louisa Hobbs Woodson who married James Monroe Woodson. She shows up in the 1900 census and again in the 1910 census and then she is gone. The 1920 census shows him living alone as a widower with his children. I was told she died in the flu epidemic of 1918 or 1919. Does anyone know of any Cherokee Indian reservations in the Boone or Pike County of Missouri that would date to 1919? If so, do you know if the Indian people were burried on reservations or in regular cemeteries? I am unable to find her in any of the cemeteries and was wondering if she had been buried on a reservation? Thanks

Rutha McMinis, McManus, Manus -- Darlene Steele (Anxious), 17:25:19 06/09/07 Sat [1]

I am looking for information that may lead to the parents or siblings of Rutha McMinis, McManus, Manus my gg grandmother. Census records show she was a weaver and was born in Tennessee. Census records also show my gg grandmother was born in 1817. I have a copy of a picture of Rutha, and she does have Native American features. It has been passed down thru the generations that Rutha was Cherokee, and her father or brother's name was Black Hawk. She married Elias Craft in 1835 in Morgan County, Alabama. The same Craft family lived in Monroe County, Tennesee before moving to Alabama. She may possibly have been born in Monroe County, Tennessee, but that is only speculation. She learned the trade of weaving somewhere. I have wondered if she may have been an indentured servant, and learned the trade that way. Weaving is although a characteristic of Cherokee women. Any information would be most appreciate. Thank you.

Also known as "Fire King" of Echota, Cherokee National East - "Old Hop" (chief or "Emperor" of the Cherokees - ancient cherokees also called their leaders "Kings")

Source - "Heritage of the Hills" - a Delaware Cty., Oklahoma History - page 214.

He was known as "Old Hop" because of his limp.

Old Frontiers pg. 67

Old Hop in his talk to Demere, gave his usual evidence of patriotism. He said: "I am now old and lie upon a bad bearskin. My life is not more than an inch long, and I know not when a bullet may cut it short. I want my brothers Captains Demere and Stuart to remember that the great warrior Oconostota and his brother Amo-Scossite are the only two men in the nation that ought to be thought of after my death. It is true that Willenawah and the Little Carpenter are my nephews, but I do not know how they would behave. If I had not remembered what I owe to a country I love, and had in mind to behave like a father, I would recommend my two sons, but I know them to be incapable, and biased by every lie that comes. I do not know how they will turn out, but I do know the others, for drunk or sober, they always admonish the indians to love the white people.

He was executed by The Ridge, and Alexander Saunders as a traitor and lawless speculator in Cherokee lands, other reasons were that he was a ruthless murderer, having beaten his pregnant wife until she miscarried, then continued to beat her until she died. We don't want to quarrel... we... hope our elder brother will not take our lands from us... because he is stronger than we are. We are the first people that ever lived on this land; it is ours and why will our elder brother take it from us?... We have done nothing to offend our elder brother since the last treaty...We hope that...you will take pity on us your younger brother, and send Colonel Seiver, a good man, to have all your people moved off our land.

Notes for ATTA-KULLA-KULLA:
Attakullakulla, Supreme Chief of the Cherokee 1760 --1775. b Died. Attakullakulla or Little Carpenter, was 'Civil' or 'White' Chief, and lived in Chota. In 1735 he was taken , along with a small group of other Cherokees, to visit London. The Indians delighted the English residents and had their own eyes broadly opened to the attributes and strengths of white civilization. When they returned home, the English traders and officials made the most of this and over the next twenty years carefully cultivated the Cherokees by offering to help whenever the Cherokees needed it. Attakullakulla was especially responsive and in 1757 he would be instrumental in persuading the Governor of South Carolina to construct Fort Loudon to strengthen England's control over the area and to encourage more trade between the Cherokee and the Eastern coastal towns. In addition, the Chief invited at this time several more traders to set up headquarters in Chota and to take Cherokee wives.

Was called Little Carpenter because of his skill at negotiating, sources said it was as if he were building compromises.

Notes for DRAGGING CANOE:
While a young boy, this future Chief wanted to accompany his father, Atta-kulla-kulla, and a Cherokee War Party going to battle with the Shawnee. Atta-Kulla-Kulla flatly refused the young boy permission to go; but he slipped away from home ahead of the War Party and hid out in a dugout canoe he knew the warriors must use. When the warriors arrived at the portage and discovered the determined lad, there was much teasing. Atta-Kulla-Kulla told his son that if he could carry the canoe across the portage he could go along; so the young boy grabbed one end of the canoe and started dragging it through the sand. The excited warriors shouted encouragement, saying
"Tsi yu Gansi.ni, Tsi.yu Gansi.ni" which translated means " he is dragging the canoe" and Dragging Canoe was his name from then on.
Dragging Canoe was one of the Cherokee's greatest warriors, ever. From the day of his declaration of a "dark and bloody settlement" during the Sycamore Shoals Treaty (1775), the Canoe never wavered from his avowed purpose of driving the Americans from Cherokee land. He had consistently refused to sign any treaty, deeds or barter away any of the land of his people. His statement to the Shawnee Delegation "WE ARE NOT YET CONQUERED" is still being repeated to this day.

Notes for DOUBLEHEAD:
The Secretary of War for the United States Governmrnt had issued orders to deal only with Doublehead between 1798 and 1805 on the assumption that he could always be bought. Some of the land scessions he made were a major portion of Tennessee, stretching from the Hiwassee River to Muscle Shoals, it contained the best hunting grounds in the Cherokee domain, including Cumberland Plateau and parts of Kentucky.

He was executed by The Ridge, and Alexander Saunders as a traitor and lawless speculator in Cherokee lands, other reasons were that he was a ruthless murderer, having beaten his pregnant wife until she miscarried, then continued to beat her until she died. He also killed a man called Bone-Polisher at the Cherokee ball play earlier in the day, of the same day he was executed.

Notes for SISTER OF MARGARET:

Nancy Ward b. About 1738, d. 1822 She was a Full blood of the Wolf Clan, born in Chota, the City of Refuge and Capitol of the Cherokee Nation. Great grandfather was Moytoy of Tellico Supreme Chief 1730 -- 1760. Moytoy's second daughter, born about 1663 and her husband, The "Raven" of Chota were Nancy's grandparents. Nancy holds a position of great significance in Cherokee history. In 1738, Tame Do (the sister of Attakullakulla) and her husband, thought to be a Delaware Indian brave or Chief ( who died early in her life) gave birth to a daughter named Nancy, who in time became the last true Ghi Ga U or Beloved Woman of the Cherokees, and in who in her views regarding Cherokee and white relationships was an ally of Little Carpenter (Attakullakulla). In the early 1750's, she married the noted war leader, Kingfisher of the Deer Clan, and was at his side when in 1755 he was killed by Creek warriors at the battle of Taliwa. She immediately picked up his weapons and rallied the Cherokee warriors to overwhelming victory. Her first tangible reward was a black slave who had been left behind by the retreating Creeks, and legend has it that this was the beginning of black slavery among the Cherokees. Back at Chota, she was chosen to fill the vacant position of a Beloved Woman. It was believed that the Supreme Beings often spoke to the people through the beloved women, and they were given absolute power in the question of what to do with prisoners taken in war, a power exclusive to Ghi Ga U. Nancy did not hesitate to use the power. She was also head of the influential woman's council that consisted of a representative from each clan, and she sat as a voting member of the council of chiefs. In the late 1750's, about 1759, she married an already wed white trader named Bryant Ward, who before 1760 left her and returned to his white wife and children in South Carolina. In 1772, an English diplomat named Robertson visited Nancy's home at Chota, which he described as being furnished in a barbaric splendor that befitted her high rank. She was then thirty - five years old and he pictured her as "queenly and commanding"(Mooney -Myths of the Cherokee pg. 204 )

In June 1776, Dragging Canoe, Abraham and Raven ,Cherokee War Chiefs, with 250 warriors each, at the instigation of the British, planned to attack Western settlements Ghi-Ga-u warned the settlers of the impending attacks, then on July 20, 1776, Abraham, marching to attack Watauga in East Tennessee , captured Mrs. William Bean, mother of the first white child born in Tennessee. When the war party returned to Cherokee Country, Mrs. Bean was condemned to be burned at the stake. She was conducted to the top of a mound that stood in the center of Tuskeegee, which was located just above the mouth of the Tellico or Little Tennessee River. Bound at the stake, faggots piled around, torch about to be applied, Ghi Ga u appeared , cut the thongs and took the captive to her home, where Mrs. Bean taught her how to keep house and make butter. As soon as it was safe, Ghi Ga u sent her brother, Tuskeegeeteehee, or Longfellow of Chistatoa andher son Hiskyteehee, or Fivekiller sometimes called Littlefellow, to escort Mrs. Bean to her husband. Numerous settlements had been made on Cherokee land, in direct violation of royal decree from England. When the Revolutionary War broke out, the Cherokees again sided with the English. In 1776, the Cherokees prepared to attack simultaneously the frontier settlements of Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia. The responsibility assigned to 700 warriors from chota was to strike the settlers who lived in the Watuga area. As much for the Cherokees' sake as for that of the settlers, Nancy Ward helped Isaac Thomas, William Fawling and another white man to escape from Chota to warn the Watugans in time to build fortifications. This act established Nancy's reputation as a friend of the settlers. When in October 1776 Colonel William Christian led nearly 2,000 troops in a devastating raid, out of respect for Nancy Ward he spared Chota, while most of the other Cherokee towns were ravaged. In 1780, at a time when most of the Watauga men were away from home and engaged in the King's Mountain campaign, at the same time, the frontier rear guards became short on rations and Nancy Ward agreed to supply beef and had some cattle driven in, the Cherokees again prepared to attack the settlements in the Watauga area. Nancy Ward warned the whites a second time, but when the soldiers returned from King's Mountain and learned of the threat, they were enraged, and set out to teach the Cherokees a lesson they would never forget. Despite Nancy Ward's pleas for mercy and friendship, Chota was destroyed along with other towns, and for a short time she and her family were placed in protective custody. When they were released, they returned to help rebuild the town, and on July 20, 1781, she was the featured speaker for the Cherokees when the reeling people reluctantly accepted a peace treaty with the Wataugans. When the Treaty of Hopewell was made in South Carolina in 1785, she offered another dramatic plea for continued peace between the Indians and the whites. Once the unhappy war years were ended she lived in Chota, where although it was no longer the capitol of the nation, it was still a city of refuge, and from all over the nation she took into her home orphaned and homeless waifs, including mixed breeds. Nancy Ward died in 1822,(see below) a truly remarkable woman who learned a permanent place of honor in Cherokee and white history"( The Cherokee People pp. 193 - 194)
Ghi Ga u conducted an inn at the Womankiller ford of the Ocowee River for many years and became quite wealthy; her property consisted of livestock, slaves and money. Travelers called her "Granny Ward" because of her age and that she was the widow of Bryant Ward Nancy grew too old to meet with council and other chiefs, she sent her servant to take her walking stick, her badge of authority, to her appointed seat in the council building to assure that her spirit was there, most notably the council at Amoah, May 6, 1817, the renunciation of her delegated rights and in favor of the first Constitutional Enactment of the Cherokees. Nancy Ward died at her home at the Womankiller ford, in the spring of 1822. Her grave site, a designated state park, is located on a knoll next to U. S. Highway 411, just South of Benton, Tennessee, Buried beside her son, Fivekiller, a veteran of the War of 1812, and her brother Longfellow. Her grave site overlooks the site where Nancy ran her inn, where the old Unicoy Pike crossed the Ocoee River.( the Pike was the main road from Knoxville into Northern Georgia and was a popular resting place for travelers)

NOTE: Tuskeegee is the town name of one of the original 8 subdivisions of the Cuesta peace town of the Coosas, primal mother tribe of the Muskogees (Creeks) Choctaws, Chickasaws, and Seminoles. The suffix " tee hee " means killer, therefore, Ghi Ga u 's brother was " Tuskeegeekiller, known to the English by the descriptive name of Longfellow, because of his stature. Hisky is Cherokee for the number 5.
The Chattanooga, Tennessee Nancy Ward Chapter of the Daughters of the
American Revolution placed a brass plaque on Nancy's grave in 1926. The Polk County and State centennial Commission honored Nancy as an American Patriot by placing a plaque near her grave that reads:

" THE WILD ROSE OF THE CHEROKEE"
Nancy ward, Princess and prophetess of the Cherokee Nation, Pocohontas of Tennessee, constant friend of the American Pioneer, had as her main objective, promoting peace between the Cherokees and the Pioneers. In 1776 she warned the settlers on the Watauga holst Rivers of the impending attack by the Cherokees. She also saved Mrs. William Bean from being burned at the stake. During the Indian outbreak of 1780, she helped many prisoners escape and often supplied starved prisoners with food. She was queenly and commanding in appearance and manner, tall, erect, and beautiful with an imperious and kindly air........."

Notes for BRYANT WARD:
[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 5, Ed. 1, Tree #2360, Date of Import: Nov 29, 1997]

Mentioned in "Tennessee Papers" (Pg 81) by Lyman Draper, in a letter from Wm. Martin, 7/7/1842, as having been known by Joseph Martin, a trader among the Cherokee, married to Nancy Ward (mother of his (Joseph's ) Cherokee wife). It is interestin that it does not say that Bryant was not listed as the father of Betsy, but since Betsy carried the name of Ward and was referred to as a "Half-breed" by Wm., I have listed her as his daughter.[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 5, Ed. 1, Tree #2360, Date of Import: Oct 6, 1997]

Bryant Ward had served in the British Army during the Colonial Wars in America. After leaving the Army, he remained in America as a trader among the colonies and Cherokee Clans. Bryant's wife in Ireland had died, and his Irish son, John Ward, followed his father to America, married into the Cherokee Nation and founded a large family known as the Missionary Wards. Their Daughter, Elizabeth, married Brig. General Joseph Martin II. They had one child, Nancy, who married Michael Hildebrand about 1830. They had children. One grandson, Michael, who appeared on the U. S. Census Roll in Polk Co., Tennessee, as living with his grandfather.

A story, in Indian women chiefs' states that Bryant Ward traveled in Cherokee
Overhill Country shortly after Cherokees captured Fort Loudon August 7,1760.
Cherokee warriors met Bryant and accused him of being a British spy. He was taken before a Council of Chiefs and was sentenced to a test that would have resulted in his death. Nancy intervened for him and a meeting between Nancy and Bryant resulted in their marriage. They had one daughter, Elizabeth.

An article in Flower and feather says that Nancy and Bryant did not live
together very long. At the start of the Cherokee - English war of 1760, Ward left the Cherokee Nation and settled on the Tugaloo River in the Pendelton District of South Carolina where he married a white woman ( Ann ). His Last Will and Testament was dated August 18, 1815, probated in Franklin Co. Georgia, where he lived at the time of his death in 1815.

The Lyman C. Draper Manuscripts include a letter written by William Martin,
son of Joseph Martin, son - in - law to Nancy Ward, through daughter Elizabeth. Letter says that Bryant and Ann Ward ( white wife ) lived near his home on the Tugaloo River in 1793 - 1797. He states Bryant Ward had Married the notorious Nancy Ward and states "she was, as I think, one of the most superior women I have ever seen. ( meaning apart from education, ect.) Bryant Ward and his family recognize her, for I have frequently seen her there; we then not living far from the Cherokee settlement."

She married (2) DANIEL BARNARD HUGHES Aft. 1784. He was born Bet. 1750 - 1759 in TN, and died WFT Est. 1789-1841.

Notes for ELIZABETH WARD:
[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 5, Ed. 1, Tree #2360, Date of Import: Nov 29, 1997]

"TENNESSEE PAPERS", Lyman C. Draper, Pg 81, Wm. Martin writes that "my father (Joseph) when appointed Indian Agent took young half-breed Cherokee, Betsy Ward, daughter of Nancy Ward, as his wife...Bryant Ward...married Nancy Ward, mother of my father's Cherokee wife." It is interesting that while Betsy carried the "Ward" name, it is stated that Bryant Ward married her mother. This would imply that Bryant was not Betsy's father, but I have shown her as the daughter of Bryant.
"TN COUSINS" Pg 202 says "Many such marriages to the Indians occurred, including that of Sam Houston and Joseph Martin, though Houston's Indian wife had no children" This confirms that Joseph and Betsy did have children as stated by William in his letter to Draper.[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 5, Ed. 1, Tree #2360, Date of Import: Oct 6, 1997]

Notes for BRIGADIER GENERAL JOSEPH MARTIN, JR.:
[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree #2009, Date of Import: Apr 25, 1998]

Brigadier General Joseph Martin II had the rare distinction of simultaneously bearing commissions to this rank in the militia service of Virginia and North Carolina. He was Commanded by Gov. Patrick Henry as, Agent and Supt. of Indian Affairs for the State of Virginia,on Nov. 3,1777.

Info says "from Martinsville, Va." General Joseph Martin is listed in Collier's Encyclopedia as having founded Martinsville, Va. in 1792. Martinsville is located 50 miles south of Roanoke, VA. and is the county seat of Henry Co. There is a note about a painting done by Wm. C. Cooper, "ENGLAND", AND 6'2", Lyman Draper, R. D. Brooks, and Betsy's connection to William and Joseph. He was a General in the war for independence from Britain, The Revolutionary War. He fought alongside George Washington and Nathaniel Green. He fought at Yorktown, Virginia.
Brice Martin is listed as Joseph's youngest brother in "TN AND KING'S MTN. PAPERS," LYMAN DRAPER.
There is a John C. Martin of Woodbury, Cannon Co, Tn, who advised Lyman Draper that his brother William was one of the older sons of Gen. Joseph Martin, who served in the War of 1812, but I have found no reference to him. The death of John C. Martin of Wilson Co., Tn., is listed 4/10/1837. NASHVILLE REPUBLICAN
Joseph was a LT. under Capt Abraham Penn in 1774, TN & KING'S MTN, L.C.DRAPER.
"HISTORY OF HENRY CO., VA" lists all children with their mothers. It would appear that there were only two children from the marriage to Betsy Ward. This book also says that Joseph "formed an association with Betsy Ward." He was a large man, bald for many years, wore chin whiskers which were plaited and worn beneath his shirt. There is a note in this book "13TH child married a "Rucker." The children are listed in the order as given in this book.
"HISTORY OF HENRY CO., VA," PG 91-94, born near Charlottsville, Va, in 1740, of English desent, strong willed, ran away from school, but great student of nature and man. Besetting sin was gambling, soon in debt. At end of French and Indian War, spent 6 years hunting and trading with indians and with valuable furs and money from gambling, paid off debts. His companion often was Ben Cleveland, hero of King's Mtn. 1763, went beyond mountains and settled Powell's Valley, now known as Martin's Station (near Knoxville). Three years as overseer for relative netted enough to buy "Scuffle Hill" Farm on Smith's River, below Martinsville. In 1773 moved his family to this plantation. 1774, Dunmore commissioned him Capt. of Militia, but served as LT. in Capt. Abram Penn's Co. against Shawnee. 1775, Capt of Committee of Safety for VA. Formed an "association with Betsy Ward, daughter of Nancy Ward, a half breed, and closely allied to some indian chiefs." Gained valuable information this way. 1777-1789 Superintent of Cherokee Affairs, appointed by Gov. Patrick Henry, pay was 20 shillings a day while with indians, half pay when at Williamsburg. Appointed Major of Battallion against Cherokees and series of successes raised him in Nation's prominence and placed him among heroes in Rev. War. 1783, commissioned to treat with Creeks, Cherokees and Chickamaugas and by gifts, warfare ended. After 15 years of public service returned to his farm, Sarah died in 1782 and he married Susanna, daughter of Thomas Graves, who lived across river above the double branches, but soon when to GA to fight indians and was elected to GA legisature. 1791-1800 served in legislature of VA from Henry Co. He was a large man with propossessing appearance, bland and courteous in manners, not lazy. Was bald for many years, but wore chin whiskers that he plaited and wore beneath his shirt. Fond of fine clothes, but stuck with old style of short trousers, knee buckles, never drunk, lost a tooth, or bled by lancet. 1804 sold "Scuffle Hill" and bought plantation from Randolph Harrison on Leatherwood where he died in 1808.

"HISTORY OF HENRY CO., VA," PG 91-94, born near Charlottsville, Va, in 1740, of English desent, strong willed, ran away from school, but great student of nature and man. Appointed Major of Battallion against Cherokees and series of successes raised him in Nation's prominence and placed him among heroes in Rev.
