My childhood ended at the age of 10, my step father turned into a drunk and made my mother and myselfs life a misery, beating my mother and chastising me for no good reason, it was as if he enjoyed doing it, my mother could not cope and i was sent to a childerns home in Shrewbury named Besford House, i was there for a short while but kept running away, it was for this reason that i was sent to the Werrinton approved schools for boys, where i was at the school for a very lengthy and unhappy 4
years from 1962 up until 1966, i was 11 when i was
first sent there, my house was Trent and my number was
90, whilst i was there i never did try to run away
from the school (more like a prison even though it was
open) the thought and fear of what would happen if i
was caught prevented this, after seeing 8 boys who had
run away in the middle of the night, and who where all
caught within 3 weeks, where then paraded on the
dinning room stage,where then ordered to drop there
pants and to bend over the 8 chairs that had been
placed in such a way to expose there naked bottoms to
the rest of the internees, they where then severely
caned on the naked backsides each in turn.
I always remember my first day at the school and my
first parade, which was at that time held out in the
open on square of concrete, i was asking the boy next
to me what i was expected to do, i was then singled
out by Mr Green (the gardener)who was taking parade,because he said i was talking on parade, he called me
out of the parade to face him in full view of all the
other boys, then for no reason he slapped my ear which
was very painful and my ear rung with bells and bled little, he told me not to cry or he would belt my
other ear, these days i have to ware a earring aid on
that ear, he had perforated my ear drum.
Over the next 4 years i was bullied, not only by the
other boys (because i was seen to be soft which
stemmed from my first day encounter with Mr Green )
and also to some extent by a few of the other staff.
It was understood that when you reached 24 stars for
good behavior you would be released and allowed home,
some boys went home after serving 6 months, meanwhile
because my parents where trying to sort out there
relationship i was kept at the school for 4 years, 4
long years of a living hell, which seemed to go on for ever at the time.
I now look back on those days with a hatred for the people and the establishment who had robbed me of a possible and happier childhood.
The few friends which i made, who came and went over
the 4 years i was at the school where Peter Dean,
Michel Chapman, and Bland.
I would dearly like to hear from any of the boys who
think that they might have known me at the school
between 1962 to 1966. My name is John known only as 90
at the school.
