Subject: Re Cotswold School

I paid a visit to the Cotswold School just before it was closed for good a few months ago and was made very welcome by the few remaining staff there. Having not laid eyes on the place since I left in 1964 it was really spooky wandering down the drive once more. Amazingly most of it was just as I remembered. The Staff houses were all more or less derelict and boarded up ditto with the Jug. All sorts of memories and faces that I thought I'd forgotten came flooding back. The farm where I spent most of my time when I was resident there was no longer the spotlessly clean place I remembered but was also derelict and had been sold off, Patricks House had been destroyed by fire, the Dining Hall had been demolished and the playpen at the back had been turned into Tennis Courts.
The Pond where the Ducks and Rabbits used to be was empty and overgrown out of all recognition. the Tractor sheds had all been demolished, the Workshops where Fettering Fred had his Painting and decorating HQ and where Sib had his Boot store were all now converted into flats. Georges, Davids and Andrews all looked more or less the same from the outside but had all been completely changed inside, Dorms removed and replaced by open plan spaces etc.
The Cotswold Approved School had been turned into the Costwold community School, a refuge for damaged Kids who needed some help in their lives. Its gratifying to know that in the end some good came out of that bloody awful place.
