Subject: Approved Schools

Reading through these posts it seems to be two types of people. One lot say Approved Schools were the best thing since sliced bread and were the making of them and the other camp says that the schools were the spawn of the devil, full of life scarring abuse. I guess it depends which school you went to. I was at the Cotswold School 1960-1963, and I can honestly say I only ever received punishments, including caning, if I asked for it, and as a persistant absconder I asked for it many times. The school, generally, was pretty easy going, most of the staff were decent and tried to do a good job, with a couple of exceptions. Has the system scarred me? My treatment within the care system and later in the Approved School didn't scar me, but the one effect it has had and which persists to this day, is that it has made it very difficult to interact with females and to form emotional ties. From 7 years old till I left school at nearly 16 I had virtually no contact with girls, in the kids homes we were segragated and obviously the Approved School was boys only. I suppose that is scarring really come to think of it. Anyway that is my feelings on the subject and I would be interested in hearing yours.
