Subject: Kneesworth Hall

Mr & Mrs Simmons were there until mid 60's. Mr King was a popular visitor while I was there (62 - 64), I remember all the staff with fondness, & a lot of the boys too. Been back a few times just to look, can't really wander round now that it's a secure mental unit, though we did at a couple of the reunions in the early oughties. Glad I wasn't there when the Hall was handed over to Cambridge- shire C.C. - it changed completely & there've been lots of complaints leading to court cases & 1 Keith(?) Laverack being jailed for 18 years in 1996 or 97 for abuse perpetrated on youngsters in his 'care'. It's a sin that the original concept was allowed to deteriorate to that state. Perhaps people higher in the food chain than Laverack have cause to search their collective conscience. Apart from the victims themselves, I feel so sorry for the Simmons's & their staff that after all the marvellous work they put into making Kneesworth Hall a haven for so many, Kneesworth is probably remembered more for the horrors of the later era.
