I have been doing some research into the rules for the administration of corporal punishment covering the time I was regularly at the receiving end of it.

At the Cotswold School the deputy head, Stevens, would usually do the caning over in the boardroom. The rules state that the cane should be administered over NORMAL trousers. Stevens would make you change from the heavy corduroy shorts into thin grey trousers. The rules also stated that for under 15's the maximum number of strokes should be 6. I received 8 strokes more than once, and had broken bleeding cuts on my backside, so vicious was he.

We were supposed to keep the rules but the staff could break them with impunity.
