Subject: Herts Training School

My experience of Herts trainning School can only be described as excellent, I arrived there in 1944 to be recieved by the deputy head Mr Chamberlain aka Pearhad. He filled me in with all the rules etc and I was allocatted to house 2. The captain of house 2 then took me on a tour of the school and introduced me to the other masters. The woodwork Section Mr Coates. The Farm Mr Jennings. The horticulture dept. The laundry. The Kitchens ruled over by the Matron the headmasters wife. The maintenace dept. The school Mr Morgan and lastly to the sewing room and fitted out with clothes (short trousers)apart from blue/white shirts clothing and footware was different, before being allocated to a section I had to spend 6 weeks in school at this tme I was taken ill and at a very low level and was put in the sick bay at this point after only 10 days at HTS I decided that i had had enough of this and whilst the rest of the boys were out on the sunday walk i pinched the long trousers the other boy in the sick bay had and scarpered and went home. Whereupon my father took me straight back I was scared to death because I knew that the penalty for running away was Six stokes of the cane across the buttocks lucky for me the asisstant head took a lenient view and I was spared after this episode I settled down I went through the usual inititations by the other boys and allocated my nickname after the six weeks of schooling I was allocated to the maintenace dept (mr Bethell an ex navy officer)And learnt all sorts of skills (which have been to my advantage in later life). We had a company of the Herts army cadet force at the school, swimming,Football, cricket, boxing, athletics, and competed away,Summer camp to a village in Gloucestershire.
to sum up it was a good life with the best of food and mates. The headmasters name was Mr Clark who was very strict at about 22 months I asked to be released and this was granted, Yes I have very fond memories and learnt what life was really like
