The Students¡¦ Parliamentary Debating Society (SPDS) held its first British Parliamentary (BP) debating demonstration meeting in the lecture room of St. Francis Xavier¡¦s College from on Friday, 23rd September 2005,
Around 60 students and teachers from St. Francis Xavier¡¦s College (SFXC) participated in the meeting which was conducted by the executive committee members of SPDS. The demonstration meeting was divided into 3 parts: introduction to BP debating, a demonstration of BP debate on the motion ¡§This House believes that Disneyland does more harm than good¡¨ and the feedback and Q & A section.
English teachers of SFXC, Mrs. Winnie Li, who attended the meeting, said the demonstration debate was marvellous and the executive committee of the SPDS were delighted for the positive feedbacks from the audiences.
The SPDS was founded in the early September this year and the executive committee consist of 11 debaters who took part in the Hong Kong Parliamentary Debating Summer Workshop 2005. They come from 9 different local and international schools in Hong Kong.
SPDS aims to promote the art of parliamentary debating among secondary school students in Hong Kong. In the meantime, SPDS would like to enhance the communications among schools.
