"國民黨除了正面戰場外，也有相當數量的遊擊隊在敵後戰場。臺灣資料顯示，以1941年初統計數位看，國民黨遊擊隊人數是中共軍隊連同遊擊隊的2.63倍，作戰次數是中共全部軍隊作戰總數的402倍。國民黨遊擊隊最初多由奉命留在敵後的國軍，或由國軍幹部、地方軍人、國民黨黨務人員所領導的民間武裝力量。
必須指出的是，在八年抗戰中，除中共以外，可以說不論中央軍、地方軍或系原軍閥部屬的舊軍隊，甚至是曾經屢屢製造過叛亂的“叛軍”，他們在抗日救國的偉大精神感召下，絕大多數都成了抗日的英雄和抗日的英雄軍隊。“一般人的觀感，都說抗戰中，中國的軍人進步了；其實，豈止是進步而已，我們的軍隊，在抗戰的烘爐中，熔化成了國家的軍隊，我們的軍隊，鍛煉成爲現代的軍人了。這是國家統一最基本的一步。”
