Subject: INFORMATION ON LAFITTE

THIS WAS POSTED BY WWW.BAITNTACKLE.NET

Hurricane Katrina Westbank Info

Due to safety concerns, (Oakwood Fire, etc.) I won't be traveling to Lafitte/Barataria tomorrow 9/2/05 to deliver supplies to a couple of family members who are riding it out in Lafitte because I feel it is just not safe.

If you would like a picture of your property taken to help you sleep better at night, please email Keith Plaisance at keith@baitntackle.net with the address of your property. (I should clarify that I will only take a picture of your house if it is on the way to Lafitte because of safety reasons) Or, Post a report on our reports page.

There have been MANY rumors about the condition of Lafitte. I can give you a very accurate description.

First, Town Hall and Piggly Wiggly are standing and look to be in great shape all things considered.

Second, There is no water in Lafitte/Barataria except for the back of Town Hall, Church St. and around Herb's Food Store. Most of the damage has been caused by the wind. I noticed MANY trees uprooted, and plenty of power lines, cable lines, etc. laying in the road. If you have a wooden fence, more than likely you have sustained some damage to it. Also is you have a house with vinyl siding, you will probably have some damage. Pretty much every roof I saw have at least some shingles missing in the most minor incidents and very large sections of roofing missing in the major incidents.

If you are even thinking of going to Lafitte, you will need to have 4 main things. They are:

Gas

Food

Generator

Water

People on the Westbank have been driving as far North as Baton Rouge just to gather these very essentials items.

The water is turned off, the phone lines are completely knocked out, so be prepared to be on your own while down there. It is pretty much a ghost town at this time.

The road heading to Lafitte from the Baton Rouge area is high and dry! You will get stopped at 3 different checkpoints by the National Guard and State Police. They will ask you for identification proving where you live to continue. From Baton Rouge, you will get directed to US-61 (Airline Highway) right in Laplace. You will then travel down Airline Highway and hit another checkpoint. From there you will be directed to the river road which will go through the Bonne Carre Spillway (sp?) and through Destrehan where you can get on the Luling Bridge. Once on the other side of the Luling Bridge, you will be stopped one final time around Luling and then its clear sailing all the way to Lafitte. Please be advised that this is no place for children or anyone that cannot take care of themselves. The bugs are horrible, the water is stagnent and smelly, and of course, ITS HOT!

Jefferson Parish will allow residents to enter these areas without checkpoints on Monday September 5, 2005 to get your belongings, check out your property, and either leave or stay but make sure you bring plenty of GAS and WATER.

Please keep in touch and I will update this page often. It is a rough draft at this point, but I have had such wonderful feedback and general questions, I figured I should post something and clean it up later on tonight.

Thanks and God Bless,

Keith Plaisance
