However, make sure that you inform your reader that a given work is a secondary reference immediately after you first mention it. In the paragraph you submitted, your reader is led to think that you had first access to Nattinger (1992) and Lewis (1993), and this impressin is only disconfirmed at the end of the paragraph.

If you have not read those authors directly, this has to be stated right off through sentences such as "Authors such as Nattinger (1992) and Lewis (1993) (cited in Richards & Rodgers, 2001)..."

Secondary references are noticed by readers who are experienced researchers/professionals of a given discipline, and failure to indicate that a reference was secondary is considered a form of plagiarism. This is the reason why observing the citation conventions is so important.
