The playoff format we know now was introduced in 1994, and as we know it is 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6 and 4 vs. 5. Now, say that the Ducks end up winning tonights game 7 against the Flames. This would have the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th seed teams in the Western Conference advance into the second round. Of course, these teams are always labeled as the "underdogs", but should the Ducks win tonight, that means the new rankings in the West would have the San Jose Sharks as the #1 seed, with home ice advantage until the finals. I was wondering if this has ever happened before, with all the underdog seeds advancing into the second round. I believe Edmonton's win the other night was only the 8th or 9th time an 8 seed has beaten the top team in the Conference, so it could only have happened a few times.
