So far all we know is that the island has some power on the outer world that we see in flashes, either flashbacks (Desmond's experiences) or flasforwards.
But I am still not convinced that this outer world we get to see through the flashes is a "real world" anyway. IMO it is part of what I call "the island effect", a fantasy within of a fantasy. We may have not seen the real world yet.

Really? -- anyasbuttmonkey, Wednesday, June 04, 11:30:27am [1] (cpc1-pool4-0-0-cust460.sotn.cable.ntl.com/80.7.61.205)
I can see the logic in that, but I for one would be kinda pissed if they turned round in Season 6 and said "oh, yeah, they never actually left"!
I personally subscribe to the "Vile Vortices" theory of explaining the Island's connection to various parts of the real world, and that maybe through that it can influence the world at large. If you haven't heard of the Vile Vortices, you should read this article at Wikipedia... it seems to tick all the right boxes in terms of the "how" and the "where" of the various location-plotholes in the Lostverse (how a Polar Bear - and Ben - ended up in Northern Africa, how a boat sailing off from Papa New Guinea wound up slap bang in the middle of the Island, stuff like that). And speaking for myself, I'd prefer this to be part of the explanation behind the Island because it's based on a "real" theory, not just something the writers have concocted (not that I mind that either!).

I don't care much about an explanation actually. I'm here for the journey not necessarily for the final answer.
Besides I doubt that they can explain the various ghosts and miracles we have seen by using a "real" theory.
I'd much prefer everything to belong to some poetical licence. As I said once, Jacob must be JJ Abrams himself since his middle name is Jacob.

Yeah, I'm gonna be wanting some answers...! -- anyasbuttmonkey, Wednesday, June 04, 06:05:57pm [1] (cpc1-pool4-0-0-cust460.sotn.cable.ntl.com/80.7.61.205)
I'm fairly certain not everything will get answered in full - I'm happy to let the numbers "just be", for instance - but I think for the bigger questions that they've raised, they'll have to provide some answers. I think at the end of the day, they have to wrap up Lost in such a way that the average TV viewer can be satisfied with it. While some of the more "higher thinkers" (of which you are obviously one seeing as I have to look stuff up when I read your more theory-based posts!) would be happy with more vagueries and "poetic license", they are going to get some shit levelled at them if they don't provide a reasoning! Obviously, I don't expect *everything* to be tied up in a ribbon by May 2010, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect most things to at least be alluded to!
