- welcome home -- Randy Ratliff, 14:28:12 11/27/05 Sun [2]
Air assault badge should be awarded to anyone who received an air medal. Also the new close combat award should be retroactive with the air assault badge.I wear the old air assault badge on my 1st cav hat.It would be nice to put on my old dress greens legally.Keep up the good work,I hope one day we are succesfull.

I was a member of Delta Co. 1/506th from Dec '67 to wounded Aug '68 and was transferred to SERTS in Bien Hoa in Sept '68 where I worked as an instructor in Tac Air, Artillery Adjustment, and PRC radio. Worked also as NCOIC of Combat Leadership Course with SERTS in Camp Evans during most of 1969 returning to the US in Feb 1970.
Would like to talk to anyone who remembers that period and me like 1st SGT Benjamin Cathey, SGT McGrown, SGT. Lewis, and SGT Jones but especially Lt. Ohl who guided me home (the long way) through Bien Hoa and Saigon (twice).

- Air Assualt -- J Moseley, 23:05:26 07/03/08 Thu [1]
Army Times dated July 7 2008 has a article that Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite, R Fla. recently secured language in the House version of the fiscal 2009 Defense Authorization Bill to require the Army to retroactively award the CAB (Combat Action Badge) to former soldiers who "participated in combat during which the person personally engaged, or was personally engaged by, the enemy at any time during the period beginning on December 7, 1941 and ending on September 18, 2001. The version of the bill has yet to go to conference with the Senate.
Point being, if they can do this with the CAB, they can do the same with the air assualt bagde for Vietnam. Her email address is several letters back in the guestbook.

To all my brothers who served in the 11th Air Assault Division "test" in the "boonies" at Ft. Benning, GA during 1963-64 (my tour ended there). I proudly wear my "11th Air Assault Wings" on my U.S. Army black & gold baseball style cap. My son-in-law recently graduated from the Army Warrant Officer Helicopter Pilot training at Ft. Whether our original wings are offical or not, we are the ORIGINALS and we are BROTHERS. No one can remove that honor and pride from us.

Let's get some help from Congress! My Congresswoman Jinny Brown-Waite (R); 5th Congressional District of Florida, is on the House Veterans Afairs Committee. I sent her a letter asking for her help Last year... One of her aids in washington responded twice and said it looked like we have a good cause for her to support. Since that time I have been told the request was sent back to DoD for a decision. If everyone contacts her office showing we support this cause I think she may be willing to forgo DoD and bring it to her committee. Go to her website and get active. Her web address is: http://brown-waite.house.gov/. The last time I spoke with her aid in Washington he wanted to know how many people this issue involved. Lets give them some phone calls, letters, and e-mails to let her know we mean business.
If we want it we have to FIGHT for it! Contact her right now!

I served with the 1st Bn 511th Inf,11th Air Assault Division
(T) from 10/1963 to 1 July 1965 when we Became the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). Serve in Vietnam with the
1st Bn 5th Cav and if we who served our time are not qualified to wear the Air Assault Badge then no one else is too. The criteria for the newer badge should be more in line
with the criteria for the airborne badge. I don't know what
the problem is at DOD and Dept of the Army but I do think
that someone should get their head out of there posterior
areas. Have written to representative years ago with no
response about this. Combat Assaults seem to meet criteria
for award as does a parachute jump in hostile territory.
Welcome Home to all who served.

Just found out about you all from a posting on Heli-Vets. Would the goal of this movement include ALL Assault Helicopter types or is this aimed specifically at whom retroactively?
Not negative on this since I was awarded one of the original Air Assault Badges when I was with the 11th Air Assault Division. I also had a year as a door gunner in the 11th Aviation Battalion so I guess 11's and 7's (two tours with the 7th Infantry Division in Korea) runs in the blood... LOL

- Honorary Combat Air Assault Badge -- M. David "Doc Deuce" DeSoucy, 09:07:29 07/20/06 Thu [1]
In June, the Alpha Avengers Assn (A Co, 2d Bn, 501st INF) had their reunion in Nashville (Opryland),TN. While there we toured Ft Campbell and the Air Assault School. They put on a nice dog and pony show for us old vets. I personally spoke with the 1SG of the school and he stated that due to a lack of aircraft availability (Iraq commitment of 101st Airborne Division aircraft), they had to modify the course and continued graduating air assault qualified personnel. Thus these graduates have never even rode in a helicopter much less combat assaulted in one. That is the equivalent of going through jump school and receiving your wings without ever jumping from an aircraft. On that note, as the ascending new president of our assn and a qualified master parachutist and air assault soldier, I was able to locate a batch (50) 501st PIR (ABN, AMBL) wing backgrounds and also purchased a batch (50) air assault badges and personally awarded them to all the members at our banquet.Afterall, they have challenged the examination and passed the practical exercise from 1967-1972. I'm also going to follow on with a certificate. It went over well with the membership. The hell with waiting around for the Dept of the Army or DoD to do the right thing. Best Regards, CPT M. David "Doc Deuce" DeSoucy, USAR, Ret.

- Dust-Off Combat badge -- Mel Miller, 23:14:39 01/19/06 Thu [1]
Another Vietnam Combat Badge... Way Long Overdue
News from In The Shadow of The Blade
October 2005
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dustoff Combat Badge Closer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For three years, Vietnam DUSTOFF veteran CW5 John
Travers has led the charge to gain deserved combat
recognition for DUSTOFF crew members. Now the
indefatigable Travers reports good news: the U.S.
House Defense Reauthorization Bill includes an
amendment requiring the Army to create the Combat
Aeromedics Badge, retroactive to Korea. Now he asks
for support from the troops out there.
"If every wounded veteran who has ridden in a
DUSTOFF would send an email to his Senator and more
importantly, make his local media aware of this
40-year injustice, we can finally get this done."
Ask your Senator for support of the House Amendment
to the Defense Authorization Bill when it goes to
conference. If you have questions or would like
media guidance, contact JT at traversjt@....

When i came to the 101st airborne unit in march of 1970 on top of a mountain, rainning like hell. I remembered i was here before just in the southern part of Viet Nam, was with the BIG RED ONE, 1/13th inf. was there 12 months never got wounded. But being a lifer i had to come back, i was assigned to D 2/506th but it was short lived, 6months later was in hospital, viet nam, japan, long beach, ca, san francicso, only to get well enough to be assinged to fort hood, tx. i was never sent any medal, of any kind, i came down on orders for the air assult but it got lost somewhere. welcome home is only a memory for what we did for out country.

I made between 25 and fifty air combat assaults with the unit and have Air Medals as proof. Ever since the Air Assault Badge was created I said that we should automatically be awarded it retroactively. I will do anything to get this accomplished. I am the widow of Lt. William (Bill) Donald Foster, Jr. He was a member of the 101st Airborne, a Ranger and served in Vietnam from Jan.69-Jan.70. He was killed in a truck-tain wreck in Feb. of 1978..Bill never talked about Vietnam, just a few little stories, however, I am looking for anyone who might have served with him, or under him in Vietnam..I am also looking for anyone who knew him during the Army or in Vietnam...This is so important to me and my children, for them to know something about their Father over in Vietnam..I look at his medals, ie. the Silver Star and Bronze Star, both with clusters and do not know why or how he got them..This is so important for my children to know and also, mine and Bill's grandchildren to be aware of what some of his missions in Vietnam were. They were so young when he died, and it left with with all of these questions from them that I can't, but feel need answering..He took a lot of pictures of Vietnam, but we can't tell much about them or what

Gentlemen, I served two tourw with the 1/9 Cavalry. Our unit is considered the most decorated unit in Vietnam. Among it's accomplishments is the first engagement in the Ia Drang Valley when on Nov. 1st 1965 captured an NVA hospital followed by an night ambush which destroyed a NVA platoon. This was before the 7th Cavalry assault at X-Ray. The following is but a few of the deed the 1/9 is credit for. 50% of the Casualties inflicted on the enemy by the 1st Cavalry Division was done by the 9th Cavalry. It not only started the battles fought by the 1st Cavalry, but is credited with other battles by other divisions, including the Vietnamese, Korean and Marines. Each of the Squadron Troops (A,B,C)made over 300 Air Assault per year for seven years. This does not count the ones made by "D" Troop. I could go on, but you get my point. I am proud to wear the older Air Assault badge even if unauthorized since I am retired. I did over 200 Air Assault while in Vietnam so I wear the badge wit

I was a little mad when the training-Sargent said if one of the men gets wounded leave him there. I knew I was not going to leave anybody. I then Voluntered for LRRP'S they took anybody no matter of MOS and the last 7 months as the some of the first-1st Cav Div LRRP'S. I went to Recondo-School at Nha Trang in RVN. The REMF'S never gave us any ribbons or combat-Awards, They gave us us listenings post crap and anything, then Indian-country CA'S by chopper we had 1 chopper given to the company. We also had no patches no names tags or anything so they sent us felt pens to draw our own pathes and names on. When we went home t

I respect your opinion there William, but...MY brother was a FO with the 9th in 67-68, was in many firefights and never felt he was entitled to the CIB, because he was not 11B. It (CIB) was not entended for any but infantry. The Air Assault Badge is totally different. Just my opinion. B Co 2/501 101st ABN 69-70
