- An "Original" 11th Air Assault Division, Ft. Benning, GA -- Bob Cooper (Sp 4, Headquarters Company) (Brothers of the Wings), 18:45:44 09/15/07 Sat [20]
To all my brothers who served in the 11th Air Assault Division "test" in the "boonies" at Ft. Benning, GA during 1963-64 (my tour ended there). I proudly wear my "11th Air Assault Wings" on my U.S. Army black & gold baseball style cap. My son-in-law recently graduated from the Army Warrant Officer Helicopter Pilot training at Ft. Rucker, AL and we are proud of him indeed.
Whether our original wings are offical or not, we are the ORIGINALS and we are BROTHERS. No one can remove that honor and pride from us.

- 11th Air Assault Div. 1964 Ft. Benning Ga. Kelly Hill -- Bill Haydock (Great to be RETIRED!), 02:52:59 03/16/11 Wed [3]
How the time flies. Was looking at one of my DD-214s and there it was. The ole 11th Air Assault Div. Ft Benning. I still have my original Air Assault Badge with the cross rifle and lightning bolt. I was in Co C 2nd Bn 38th Inf (2nd Inf Div)located there on Kelly Hill as a PFC E-3. I was also on the CH-34 Helicopter that went down in the parking lot while we were training. Had a good day down on the parade field on our one and only family day. I was a gunner 1st Class on an M-60 the latest MG back in the day. Think it replaced the ole 30 Cal. Capt. Casto was my CO. Would like to hear from anyone that I might have served with back then. God Bless all our service men and women who have served and is serving today n our military.

In addition to my original post. I am also looking for a picture of the red patch for the Air Assault Division (Test) from 1963-1965. Dad says it was red with the white wings and number 11. I can only find the blue patch with the white wings and number 11. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Thanks! Sheri

I flew two tours in RVN.Both with air cav troops. And yes,I have the air medals to prove it.As too how many CA's I did,I have no idea.My first tour I was a slick CC. The second tour I flew scouts in a loh,(oh-6a),and again, have no idea how many missions I flown, with about 98% of them we were taking fire.It goes along with being a scout,or in any helicopter unit over there. My tour dates are 1-70/12/70,and 5/71-2/72.

- Air Assault Badge -- Anthony Violino, 11:21:15 05/26/07 Sat [2]
I served with the 1st Bn 511th Inf,11th Air Assault Division
(T) from 10/1963 to 1 July 1965 when we Became the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). Serve in Vietnam with the
1st Bn 5th Cav and if we who served our time are not qualified to wear the Air Assault Badge then no one else is too. The criteria for the newer badge should be more in line
with the criteria for the airborne badge. I don't know what
the problem is at DOD and Dept of the Army but I do think
that someone should get their head out of there posterior
areas. Have written to representative years ago with no
response about this. Combat Assaults seem to meet criteria
for award as does a parachute jump in hostile territory.
Welcome Home to all who served.

1st CAV 68-69, MOS 11b/11f... Drafted into killing for a living for a 12 month tour and did all of it in the bush. It was the worst camping trip I'v ever been on. I got a CIB, Air Medal (for a min of 25 combat air assaults, actually did more, some were hot), etc... A reasonable person would concluded I should get the award.
If I'm not enough without, I'll never be enough with it... Trust me fellas, I'm definitely enough without it. I still want one though... like a pretty woman, a curse and a blessing.

I was a member of Delta Co. 1/506th from Dec '67 to wounded Aug '68 and was transferred to SERTS in Bien Hoa in Sept '68 where I worked as an instructor in Tac Air, Artillery Adjustment, and PRC radio. Worked also as NCOIC of Combat Leadership Course with SERTS in Camp Evans during most of 1969 returning to the US in Feb 1970.
Would like to talk to anyone who remembers that period and me like 1st SGT Benjamin Cathey, SGT McGrown, SGT. Lewis, and SGT Jones but especially Lt. Ohl who guided me home (the long way) through Bien Hoa and Saigon (twice).

Just found this site. Servied with 1st cav in 1969. Trying to find out if there has been any progress made on this subject . Just had my DD-214 updated, they approved everything I applied for except the Air Assault Badge. Just found the Parity Coaltion web site. I think it is great, I am still trying how to become a member and supporter. I too was with the 101st, 1/506th in 1966, we trained and basically wrote the book on Air Mobile Opns. It is just like so many other things that happened to all of the Vets from that War......Thanks and God Bless for your service to our country....

- Air Assault Badge -- Tom Gilbert, 11:45:16 11/06/12 Tue [1]
I guess there are a lot of us who feel the same about wearing a badge that we should just be entited to proudly wear. Served with the Big Red One at Bear Cat and then Di An in 1966. Before this so called Air Assault school we flew in to both cold and hot LZ's, mostly on Huey's but also in Chinooks, Caribous, and C-123's. I've tried twice to go through my Senators and Congressmen to try and get authorization to wear the Air Assault Badge. First try, Army HR told my Congressman that they considered going retro-active but thought the cost would be too much. The second attempt, the answer was that you needed to complete the Air Assault School training that started in 1974, most of us by then were out of the service. Our experiences helped write the training for the School. I wear the Badge anyway, authorized or not, but it would sure be nice if they recognized us for this feat and added it to our DD214's. Welcome home brothers. Alpha 2/16th 1st Infantry Division.

Top Army leadership advises the Air Medal is no longer awarded for combat air assaults. The implication is since we got the Air Medal and current troops do not we are even. What do you think?

There is also no recognition badge for all the door gunners...With the elimination of the Glider Corp, we have prodly kept their badge as ours. Wings with the Capital G in the center;

I served in Viet Nam 1971 with the 101st Rakkasan's with plenty of combat assaults, If I want to wear the assault badge I will, who's going to tell me to take it off? I think I deserve it. I don't need some senator or anyone who wasn't there to tell me other wise. I'd just tell them to get over it and get a life.

After having bitched to everyone that I have talked to about the 101 st school and the fact that we were the ones that developed the Air Assault concept and did in Vietnam I strongly think (know) that we should be allowed to wear the AAB. I served with Hq 2/7 1st Cavalry Division (AMBL) in 1965/66. Spent november 17th walking from XRAY to ALBANY lost 155 KIA and 124 WIA. Hell yes we deserve to wear the AAB. I like others on here wear the original 11th Air Assault Div tes wings. They look a hellof alot better than the ones that the 101st are issuing. Peace and welcome home my brothers. Jim

Earned 2 Air Medals. One w/the 82nd and one w/the 1st Cav.
Probably have well over 100 combast assaults, with some being in hot LZ's. We wrote the book on Air Assault and it's time we get the recognition before there's not one of us left to speak for it.

- Vietnam origin of the Air Assault Badge -- Jack R. Rickman, Major, US Army Retired (GI Jack), 15:31:40 03/23/11 Wed [1]
In 1971, more than forty years ago, I was at Camp Eagle near Hue in South Vietnam in the 101sr Airborne Division. I was assigned by the division G3 the task of designing an air mobile badge. Upon completion of the staff study I delivered it in to the division G-3. With the study were hand drawn illustrations of an Airmobile Badge, along with embroidered cloth badges. The badge was deliberately designed to reflect the glider badge of WW II. The hand drawn images I did freehand using as models a parachute badge and a helicopter drawing taken from a military manual. The cloth badges were done by a Vietnamese tailor. One of the cloth badges had a gold colored rotor blade as an alternative design. The hand drawn badge had visable struts. In the text it was suggested that they would probably be impractical on a real badge. I promptly forgot about the study. I thought "Nobody is going to okay a badge for riding to work in a helicopter." I am pleased to have been wrong about that. I was unaware that the 101st was wearing the badge until 7 February 1974 when the Ft. Bragg post newspaper, The Paraglide, published an article making the announcement. I was astonished but delighted. I am very proud to have been the person most directly responsible for designing the AIR ASSAULT BADGE. I deeply regret not having had the opportunity to earn the badge before I reitred.

Gentlemen, I served two tourw with the 1/9 Cavalry. Our unit is considered the most decorated unit in Vietnam. Among it's accomplishments is the first engagement in the Ia Drang Valley when on Nov. 1st 1965 captured an NVA hospital followed by an night ambush which destroyed a NVA platoon. This was before the 7th Cavalry assault at X-Ray. The following is but a few of the deed the 1/9 is credit for. 50% of the Casualties inflicted on the enemy by the 1st Cavalry Division was done by the 9th Cavalry. It not only started the battles fought by the 1st Cavalry, but is credited with other battles by other divisions, including the Vietnamese, Korean and Marines. Each of the Squadron Troops (A,B,C)made over 300 Air Assault per year for seven years. This does not count the ones made by "D" Troop. I could go on, but you get my point. I am proud to wear the older Air Assault badge even if unauthorized since I am retired. I did over 200 Air Assault while in Vietnam so I wear the badge wit

Well Doug, just how many meaningless medals do you need for just doing what you were supposed to do?
I went on so many Combat Assaults in Vietnam that I can't even remember anyway near the actual number, yet unlike the chopper pilots and their crews I was awarded only one Air Medal for being in a "hot" combat assault, (although I made more hot assaults than just one). So whenever I see some VN Vet chopper pilots and chopper crew guys with an absurd number attachment (AN ACTUAL TWO DIGIT NUMBER DEVICE) to his Air Medal it always makes me smile at the utter ridiculousness of the issuing of these awards and the whole award system in general...I mean, come on people...after all, when their "Combat Assault" of landing us at the LZ job is over (except to return back to a major Base Camp), our job as Grunts and other attached personnel was just beginning. (In the 101st we stayed in the Field for 30 plus days).
Thanks for the ride chopper guys so us 101 guys could get faster to wherever Intel thought the NVA was - in the mountainous triple canopy jungle along (and inside) the Laotian Border of I Corps.
Shouldn't I also get 12 or whatever absurd number of Air Medals! Wasn't I also aboard the Huey during these "Combat Assaults"?!
You guys and your obsession with getting yet more pointless jazz to sport on your uniforms...Christ they issue an award for just being in the military for a day! Every couple of years I see the military add yet another medal or badge, so a guy could end up with ribbons and badges up to his epaulets after 20 years service and never have even heard a shot fired in anger.
I'm waiting for the day they start giving out medals for getting a medals to add to this crazed nonsense policy of awards for nothing.
I say,if you want to bitch about awards, do something that makes sense; i.e., how about fighting to put all valor awards ahead of the rest of non-valor awards as a cause?

Not that having the badge would make any difference now but the Military should give honor where honor is due. We all went to school at O.J.T, many of us died during our training and many were wounded. Vietnam Vets were considered dirt when they came home. I don't think this this small tribute to much to ask?

As a former 101st VN Grunt...Frankly, I don't give a fu*k about any stateside training qualifying badges. Get on the chopper, fly to LZ, get off the chopper...and you get a badge for that?!
How impressive.
The only badges that count to me are the CIB and CMB... and only if you actually earned them...and you know if you did or cheated to get it.
Yeah, one has to love those Field Grade Officers that were awarded CIBs to go along with their Silver Stars and a hand full of other American medals (not to mention the gook medal of honor medals and cross of gallantry with palm medals) because they sat on their asses while being "Advisors" to a bunch of those worse than worthless South Vietnamese gooks in uniform that I refuse to call soldiers.

Some of the guys in Vietnam who were assigned as forward observers to the Infantry units feel slighted as you do about the Air Assault Badge. We ate, slept, fought and many died as grunts with the Infantry but the Army said they were not qualified for the CIB because they were Artillery. I landed in my share of hot LZs, hit by shrapnel and shot in the shoulder while in the A Shau Valley but no CIB or Air Assault Badge. Brothers, THANK YOU! For all that you did, all that you wanted to do, and all that you gave! NOBODY can take a thing from us, NOBODY. And NOBODY can give us anything. We already EARNED it all. I don't need no bleeding blankety blank bloke who sits in an office flying a chair to tell me that I "deserve" to be able to wear what I already earned. It was "OFFICIAL" when you trained, fought, and bled for it. And thats just the way it is. Hoooorahh. Heres to us and those like us, and theres dang few left!

I too was with 11th AAD (test). When we became 1st Cav before leaving for Vietnam we had a lot of guys leave the service because their three year enlistment was up, and guess what, the 11th AAD (test) was three years long. So many had to be replaced that had done all of the experimenting and training. I too proudly wear my badge (on my hat). I never made it to Vietnam. My enlistment was up the day 1st Cav landed at Vietnam. Note: I went in during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

excluding an 11f nam tour in the sweet spot of 68-69 killing for a living with recon 1/8 cav (air medal = 25 ca) is astounding. not to be authorized to wear AAB at age 62 is easy for me...i wear it anyway on od jacket below my CIB.

- Air Assault Award -- terrence plank, 21:19:56 02/04/10 Thu [1]
We must have done 60 or more air assaults during the time I served in Vietnam (67-68) 3/506th. Between the platoons, shock force, and LRRPS we were frequently being inserted into hot LZ's.
Why wouldn't this qualify us for this award?
My vote is award it.

Army Times dated July 7 2008 has a article that Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite, R Fla. recently secured language in the House version of the fiscal 2009 Defense Authorization Bill to require the Army to retroactively award the CAB (Combat Action Badge) to former soldiers who "participated in combat during which the person personally engaged, or was personally engaged by, the enemy at any time during the period beginning on December 7, 1941 and ending on September 18, 2001. The version of the bill has yet to go to conference with the Senate.
Point being, if they can do this with the CAB, they can do the same with the air assualt bagde for Vietnam. Her email address is several letters back in the guestbook.

Let's get some help from Congress! My Congresswoman Jinny Brown-Waite (R); 5th Congressional District of Florida, is on the House Veterans Afairs Committee. I sent her a letter asking for her help Last year... One of her aids in washington responded twice and said it looked like we have a good cause for her to support. Since that time I have been told the request was sent back to DoD for a decision. If everyone contacts her office showing we support this cause I think she may be willing to forgo DoD and bring it to her committee. Go to her website and get active. Her web address is: <a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://brown-waite.house.gov/.">http://brown-waite.house.gov/.</a> The last time I spoke with her aid in Washington he wanted to know how many people this issue involved. Lets give them some phone calls, letters, and e-mails to let her know we mean business.
If we want it we have to FIGHT for it! Contact her right now!

Not negative on this since I was awarded one of the original Air Assault Badges when I was with the 11th Air Assault Division. I also had a year as a door gunner in the 11th Aviation Battalion so I guess 11's and 7's (two tours with the 7th Infantry Division in Korea) runs in the blood... LOL

- Honorary Combat Air Assault Badge -- M. David "Doc Deuce" DeSoucy, 09:07:29 07/20/06 Thu [1]
In June, the Alpha Avengers Assn (A Co, 2d Bn, 501st INF) had their reunion in Nashville (Opryland),TN. While there we toured Ft Campbell and the Air Assault School. They put on a nice dog and pony show for us old vets. I personally spoke with the 1SG of the school and he stated that due to a lack of aircraft availability (Iraq commitment of 101st Airborne Division aircraft), they had to modify the course and continued graduating air assault qualified personnel. Thus these graduates have never even rode in a helicopter much less combat assaulted in one. That is the equivalent of going through jump school and receiving your wings without ever jumping from an aircraft. On that note, as the ascending new president of our assn and a qualified master parachutist and air assault soldier, I was able to locate a batch (50) 501st PIR (ABN, AMBL) wing backgrounds and also purchased a batch (50) air assault badges and personally awarded them to all the members at our banquet.Afterall, they have challenged the examination and passed the practical exercise from 1967-1972. I'm also going to follow on with a certificate. It went over well with the membership. The hell with waiting around for the Dept of the Army or DoD to do the right thing. Best Regards, CPT M. - Dust-Off Combat badge -- Mel Miller, 23:14:39 01/19/06 Thu [1]
Another Vietnam Combat Badge... Way Long Overdue
News from In The Shadow of The Blade
October 2005
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dustoff Combat Badge Closer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For three years, Vietnam DUSTOFF veteran CW5 John
Travers has led the charge to gain deserved combat
recognition for DUSTOFF crew members. Now the
indefatigable Travers reports good news: the U.S.
House Defense Reauthorization Bill includes an
amendment requiring the Army to create the Combat
Aeromedics Badge, retroactive to Korea. Now he asks
for support from the troops out there.
"If every wounded veteran who has ridden in a
DUSTOFF would send an email to his Senator and more
importantly, make his local media aware of this
40-year injustice, we can finally get this done."
Ask your Senator for support of the House Amendment
to the Defense Authorization Bill when it goes to
conference. If you have questions or would like
media guidance, contact JT at traversjt@....
